During the encoding, the interface for the tuples can be either a map, slice/array or struct. Structs are converted internally into maps (checking the 'abi' tags), but there are no tests for that so I am not sure how well it behaves. For the decoding, the tuples are decoded always as maps.
We could use this tool https://github.com/mitchellh/mapstructure for both the encoding (struct to map) and the decoding (map to struct).
