I figured out what the issue was: the context was being re-created instead of referenced.

Hi @BlackConure, have also in mind that createContext takes as an argument the default value of context and you should make sure that it has the same shape as the value that you pass to the Provider

Yes thanks. I think the version I posted I was still fiddling with it.

I am going to try to use the context api as a socket.io component. Data will not be stored, just the state and promise based api functions. Any concerns with doing that?

Thank you for putting this together. I am optimistic that this will greatly simplify our app over using redux.
