Seems that there's still quite a bit of stuff missing. I haven't used the official WhatsApp app yet (don't have any phones that will run it, and it doesn't seem to want to work on tablets), but it seems that the server is expecting some kind of response in regards to receiving a message, to notify it that you've received it, as well as needing to figure out how to parse all the bytes that we don't know what they are ...

Try the android emulator from the SDK (dev.android.com) with an old version of WhatsApp for example the 2.6.7722. You need to google that it is a little hard to find.
