Animated backgrounds for lovelace
Describe the bug
A clear and concise description of what the bug is.
On a test view I don't want to define the background from the state of a specific entity but I would like to cycle from different backgrounds (mainly to test them).

Your idea as completely as you can describe it
I'm running home assistant (0.112.3) and the lovelace ui on a raspberry pi 3b+ using chromium in kiosk mode. Chromium reports that it's a mobile device. This is some how making the animated background perform like it's a mobile app and so there is no background. This is problematic because though I wouldn't want the mp4 to play on an actual mobile device the device I'm using is not a mobile device. I think this issue may be because of chromium. I have opened the videos just fine by hitting the url in a regular browser and they play fine on the same device using another tab. But they will not play in home assistant. I noticed at the end of your documentation that you mentioned adding code that attempts to block video streaming if it detects a mobile device so I'm assuming that's what is preventing it. Is there a way to force it to stream when a certain ip address is requesting it?
I only believe that Chromium is reporting that it is a mobile device because I was attempting to run the spotify web player using chromium and it forced me to download the mobile app (which I cannot because it's not a mobile device!) The animated background works just fine on my computer.
Describe the solution you'd like
To make this easier, I would suggest either adding a control that would allow me to force override the mobile device logic and just play the videos no matter what. I don't access home assistant via any mobile devices and if I did it would be through wifi anyway so not a big deal. Plus I've downloaded the videos to the device hosting home assistant and they are pulling local files now anyway.

Hi there,
thanks for this plugin, it's really nice!
I wanted to block the background to be loaded from my phone since it become quite pointless (and barely visible) and when not in Wifi it is also a data consumer :)
Using the devices in HA I didn't yet manage to don't load it, but I was wondering if this can be improved a bit with the ability to block maybe per user-agent basis (using wildcard) or device type somehow.
Thanks :)
Andrea

Hi
First of all, awesome project, really love the video backgrounds, especially with the sync to weather status. From the available weather statuses I imagine you live in a lovely place, maybe some tropical island or somewhere where its just nice all the time. And whilst I love the fact things default to some beautiful sunny background, give me solace from the torrential downpour, mostly like going on outside.... I wondered if you could help us less fortunate at least be reminded of the reality of what is going on outside. At the very least so I stop wearing shorts all the time.
Here in Manchester, UK the weather is fairly changeable, usually between "Rainy" and "Cloudy". It would also be interesting if there were perhaps fog, snow, windy, thunderstorms (I'm not entirely sure on all the naming in DarkSky).
As an aside, I notice that DarkSky reports "Clear Night" to which there are options, but I wondered if there is anything I can do to just deal with night perhaps relating to sun set rather than the weather status and be able to display some night videos?
Thanks again for the great project.
Andy

I want to exlude HA mobile app from animated background.
Device (please complete the following information):
This is a feature request to adjust the opacity of the background. This is useful for dark themed backgrounds so that bright colours in the mp4 can be muted using opacity.
I've manually done this by editing line 488 of the js and adding in my desired opacity but it would be good if this could be done using the lovelace yaml configuration.

First of all I'd like to thank you for releasing this stellar frontend integration! It's made a huge aesthetic difference to my dashboard and I very much appreciate your work on this project.
Describe the bug
It appears there is a race condition governing whether or not the included/excluded devices will prevail over the included/excluded users and vice versa. If using both included users and excluded devices configuration options as I do in my config, sometimes the excluded devices will not display the background but most times they do. Testing this with an excluded device and included user produces the same results as testing with an excluded user and included device. Removing one or the other configuration option resolves the problem.
EDIT: upon further testing it appears that explicitly setting the enabled
bool to true
will override both of these configuration options, i.e. no matter if the user and device both match a condition for exclusion, the animated background will appear regardless. This does not occur vice versa, i.e. if set to false, any included users/devices will not cause such an override.

It is expected that if a user/device matches a condition to be excluded, it will not be included by another configuration option, and vice versa, i.e. if a user has been explicitly excluded (or not explicitly included) then no matter if they are using an included (or not explicitly excluded) device, they will not observe an animated background, and if the user is included (or not explicitly excluded) but is using a device which has been explicitly excluded (or not explicitly included), they will also not observe an animated background.
It is also expected that the enabled
option, if explicitly set to true
, does not override the animated background display if a device/user has matched a condition for exclusion.

Your idea as completely as you can describe it
There is any way in order to change the resolution of the background? I see that it is rendering a lower resolution and the quality it is not perfect. I have a tablet with 1920 x 1200, but the resolution which this add-on is showing, it is less than 1280x .... I think is somewhere around 900 x ..... which is pretty low
Describe the solution you'd like

Your idea as completely as you can describe it
I love the idea of a animated background and as my modified "Your Name" theme is all for transparency I saw a problem in the sidebar not being animated. After some fight and a lil help from the community it's working. Maybe you want to mention the lil JS snippet needed for that. https://github.com/dreimer1986/yourname_card_mod/blob/master/www/styles.js
You still need the help of card-mod, but this fixes the last non transparent layer the sidebar is made of. If someone wants to tinker around, the theme yaml shows the rest you need under the card-mod-sidebar section.

Solution is found above, too. ^^

Describe the bug
I have a tablet on the wall and installed animated background latest version. This works great, but sometimes, especially after waking up, the screen starts to flicker. It looks like it happens when the background is reloaded. I saw the same issue on my mobile phone.
On the tablet i'm running Fully Kiosk Browser
Without animated background i don't have this issue. On a mac with Chrome also not.

Unfortunately I live in Northeast US and we are getting snow.. ( yea i know i don't like it either) I am not sure if i have the code right to add in another weather condition. Or what happens when weather is giving 2 weather conditions at the same time. ie snowy, rainy. Right now it goes to the default.. anyway to change that?
Describe the solution you'd like
Would like the option of adding additional weather conditions and to possibly accommodate the 2 conditions given by weather home.
BTW love the backgrounds! Reminds me of places I have been.
Thanks so much in advance.
Great work. Would you be willing to add the ability to use folders instead of URLs. For example, I would like to put my videos in folders such as:
/local/animated-backgrounds\rainy
/local/animated-backgrounds\cloudy
/local/animated-backgrounds\foggy
etc
This way we can simply drop new mp4 files into the folder and the dashboard would cycle through the videos in those folders.
Hey Villhellm,
Thanks for the great addition to Home Assistant. I have a question about how it loads on different dashboards.
In my HA setup I have 2 Dashboards and I would like to add the animated backgrounds on the second dashboard only. Each dashboard uses its own Lovelace config file and I've added the config below to the 2nd dashboard only.
animated_background:
views:
- config:
default_url: /local/backgrounds-animated/sunny.html
entity: sun.sun
state_url:
above_horizon: /local/backgrounds-animated/sunny.html
below_horizon: /local/backgrounds-animated/night.html
path: /lovelace-rineke/temperatuur
- config:
default_url: /local/backgrounds-animated/sunny.html
entity: sun.sun
state_url:
above_horizon: /local/backgrounds-animated/sunny.html
below_horizon: /local/backgrounds-animated/night.html
path: /lovelace-rineke/weer
But when I view the second dashboard, it opens with it's static background (in my case a custom image) The animated background only shows after I manually refesh the page.
Is there any way to avoid that and have the animated background show right away when opening the second dashboard?
Home Assistant version: 0.108.9
Animated Background version: dd7563b
Browser: Chrome (81.0.4044.129)
Thanks for your time :)
Hey.
Got this up and running. Looks great. :-)
I was looking to get cast a Lovelace panel to my Chromecast when it's idle. The casting works, but there's no video in the background.
I'm using Nabu Casa for remote access, don't know if that's an issue with casting? Wouldn't think so though...
Any chance you could implement?
Thanks
Ray
Love your work on this.
I see you've done some good code around setting any existing css background to transparent
.
My setup has a scenario where I'm using a background image, and a semi-transparent background colour on it, to give it a glassy/opaque look that matches my theme, and helps mute the background image so it doesn't interfere with the ui.
The CSS I'm using is essentially this one liner:
background: linear-gradient(#241b2fdd, #241b2fdd), center / cover no-repeat url("/local/backgrounds/synthwave-2.jpg") fixed;
The effect can be seen in this screenshot:
It would be great to be able to replicate this effect whilst using your video background plugin.
Describe the solution you'd like
It would be great if we could add a config setting, that allows us to disable setting the background to transparent (in the removeDefaultBackground()
function.
I guess you would probably still default to removing any default background (as this is probably the most common expectation when using this), but having the ability to disable that would allow me to modify the CSS I used above, to something like the following, which only sets the partially transparent background, and not also the background image as before:
background: linear-gradient(#241b2fdd, #241b2fdd);
That way, I can still have the purple overlaying the video, as to dull it down on mute it's visiblility, and not interfere with the UI elements on top.
Thanks again for your great work.
Sorry having issues with this.
Installed with HACS all ok.
I add this using the raw configuration editor:
animated_background: default_url: /local/backgrounds/ypy8bw9fgw1zv2b4htp2.hd.mp4 included_users: - chris entity: weather.home state_url: null sunny: - 'https://cdn.flixel.com/flixel/hlhff0h8md4ev0kju5be.hd.mp4' - 'https://cdn.flixel.com/flixel/zjqsoc6ecqhntpl5vacs.hd.mp4' - 'https://cdn.flixel.com/flixel/jvw1avupguhfbo11betq.hd.mp4' - 'https://cdn.flixel.com/flixel/8cmeusxf3pkanai43djs.hd.mp4' - 'https://cdn.flixel.com/flixel/guwb10mfddctfvwioaex.hd.mp4'
Nothing happens.
Can you point me in the right direction please?
Would love to get this working.

Hi,
Thanks for your great work. Your recent fix resolved the issue i had with animated background as it didn't work after upgrading to .108.3. Current issue is that animated background goes off (plain background) after few minutes. I had to reload the url to get the animated background again. Also, background is applied only to the first tab. Other tabs just has a blank screen. Any possibility to look into these issues?
After creation of a custom sensor to sum sun and weather, only the standard background is being showed.
Configuration.yaml (copied from example in documentation, I didn't build any template manually)

I created the new sensor in configuration.yaml, changed from standard weather to new sensor (sun and weather) in raw editor, added new weather status as per its documentation (like snowy-rain and windy, for example) and new video sources. Restarted HA. Now it's cloudy and sun above horizon. I tried replacing the new video for the standard one (previously working), with no difference. The new custom sensor is being recognized by the system. Re-replaced the videos by the original ones. Re-restarted HA. No difference.
Expected behavior
I expected to add custom videos (hosted in One Drive, Dropbox or other) to mirror weather and sun condition (night videos for night time and day videos for day time, according to their respective weather conditions).

Sorry to bother, I'm a beginner with these technical configurations, so I'm pretty sure it's my fault.
As many things on the WebUI were overhauled completely and more will come with future versions most of the paths the addin docks onto are not on the former locations anymore. Thus the whole addin is DEAD. Maybe someone who already forked it and did some tinkering wants to look into that?

I would love to use this plugin. I tried both the manual setup and the HACS, both give the same error
First off I love this plugin makes my dashboard more striking.
I have no idea how possible this would be but do you think there could be scope for conditional backgrounds based on current view as well as an entity's state
I have a gaming, security, weather, light etc etc views and it would look awesome.
I could have a different dynamic background for each tab that shows a relevant background based on an appropriate entity state for that view
Hi, Great addon. Your default example (animated backgrounds for all views) works. If I add a view option for a specific path I get the same background for all views. If I add two view specific options, I don't get anything.

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
A clear and concise description of what the problem is. Ex. I'm always frustrated when [...]
Not a problem, more like an idea to improve the usage of this card on multiple views.
Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.
Instead of having each view in the ui-lovelace.yaml file, it might be better define "groups" (that literally replace view, the rest is the same).
In each view then everyone can define the group that view is part of, such as:
animate_background: weather
or
animate_background: none
This way you can prevent redundancy in the configuration of the backgrounds having in each view the ability to add animate_background and assign a preset pre-defined in the ui-config.yaml (technically, the lack of animate_bacgkround in the view would still be considered "none".
Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.
The only alternative I can think of is to create a single config for each view, and sometimes this would be the same for multime views.
Another alternative would be that the view in the ui-lovelace.yaml would be a comma separated list of views where to apply the config, but I do think that a "group" (or template or preset if you wish) would be more "elegant".

Add any other context or screenshots about the feature request here.
I completed installation steps for HACS (second method).
How do I display the animated background on a dashboard tab now? I tried adding weather.home as an entity to a blank dashboard but I don't see the animated background.
Thanks!
Edit:
Figured out my problem- had to delete user from the example.
Any way to make it so the animated background is only displayed on certain dashboard views?
Edit2:
Nevermind. Had to delete default url and adding a group as described.
since updating to "d0699ca" home assistant 0.109.2 the backgrounds no longer load
if i set my background opacity to a low number the backgrounds show but the configuration pages and development pages are awful.
it worked fine pre this update
