Guide - Enhancing head movement on TrackIR (by Rudel_chw) - this also mentions (?) what
Aircraft in DCS are identified by various more or less precise names, starting with the e-shop
name of the module (e.g. "DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt") which can contain multiple aircraft models.
Then there are names used in the Mission Editor (e.g. "P-47D-30" and "P-47D-30 (Early)") and then
the type
name that can be found in the Mods/aircraft/<module>/entry.lua
(e.g. "P-47D-30"
and "P-47D-30bl1").
It is not easy to see the mapping between these names, as this seems to be contained in the compiled
Lua files like CoreMods/WWII Units/P-47D-30/P-47D-30.lua
(mostly under CoreMods/aircraft
).
You need to use the type
name in the SnapView.lua
or for KNEEBOARD
subdirectories in MIZ files.
Type is also returned by the Unit:getTypeName method.
The following table shows the type and ME names of the playable aircraft ordered by type (but grouped by module, only modules I know are shown):

2023-12-24 update: I don’t bother anymore and leave the kneeboard in the default position for the plane. I can use Kneeboard Builder, it is handy for KB preparation (which I don’t use), but it needs to run to reposition the kneeboard to my liking.
Warning

This may not pass integrity check! |
This needs to be done inside installation directory (not user config), under Scripts\Aircrafts\_Common\Cockpit
in file ViewportHandling.lua
.
To place the kneeboard to the bottom left, modify the file starting with the first default_width
appearance like so:
--[[ EDIT: Fixed to static values
local default_width = w0 + (64 * zoom_value)
if default_width > h then
default_width = h
end
if default_width > 0.5 * w then
default_width = 0.5 * w
end
local default_height = default_width / aspect
--]]
local default_width = 768
local default_height = 1024
local default_y = h - default_height
local default_x = 30 -- for left side controls to be on screen too
--[[ EDIT: Fixed to static values
local default_x = w - default_width - x0
if is_left then
default_x = x0
end
--]]
