vab uses NativeActivity and is bound to the limits of the SDK and NDK... Just like everyone else.

Ok, I've looked at the class hierarchies of Application and NativeActivity and both share substantial portion of the hierarchy but are otherwise distinct:

java.lang.Object
   ↳	android.content.Context
 	   ↳	android.content.ContextWrapper
 	 	   ↳	android.app.Application
java.lang.Object
   ↳	android.content.Context
 	   ↳	android.content.ContextWrapper
 	 	   ↳	android.view.ContextThemeWrapper
 	 	 	   ↳	android.app.Activity
 	 	 	 	   ↳	android.app.NativeActivity

Without being an expert I'd guess that if you won't overwrite NativeActivity, then you should get the usual startup time (i.e. without much slowdown). Would be wise to measure it though (see the links above how to do that - it could be a major selling point for vab to produce ultra fast startup Android apps).
