I'm running on CentOS 6.4 as well and specifying the data dir. Did you make sure your init script is loading /etc/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.yml and not another file? Mine has the line:

ES_CONFIG=${ES_CONFIG:-${ES_PATH_CONF}/elasticsearch.yml}

Might be worth verifying in the init script DAEMON_OPTS has the correct ES_CONFIG set as well.

@jlambert121 Looks like my init script does not reference elasticsearch.yml and is looking for settings in /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch. Instead of messing with that, would you mind posting a gist of your init script?

I grabbed an elasticsearch rpm a month or two ago, and I can't remember where I got it from or if I rolled my own :). Where do you get yours from?

I have no clue where this came from - I can't even remember if I rolled my own RPM without some more looking on my part. Here's the init script I use:

I didn't get a chance to try it out, but I will definitely test and give feedback. thanks for posting! I shall return...

Actually, my init script is fine. Rather, I'm missing env variables in /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch. The rpm ships with all the correct settings, but this puppet-elasticsearch module removes them, so you have to explicitly define each environment variable in:

$elasticsearch::params::service_settings

I believe it takes a hash format. /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch is generated from a puppet template that loops through that hash and spits out the key-values.

Thanks for posting your init script though - looks like I've pretty much got the same one.

Also, Elasticsearch rpm and deb packages are available on their site at http://www.elasticsearch.org/download/, so I'm pretty sure that's where I got the rpm.
