Events version: http://jsfiddle.net/vhCr4/

I think this is what I will use for the moment.

Using events seems legit to me. For your first example, why did you have to use an object? Directly using a vm property seems ok too: http://jsfiddle.net/RbhLL/

Thanks Evan. You’re right about using the VM property, but I didn’t want to directly manipulate the VM properties from my directive.

If the directive needs to somehow affect the state of the VM, then it doesn't matter if you do it directly or via events. If you think about it, all two-way bindings like v-model are manipulating the state of the vm as well. In most cases it's about what the directive is meant to do.

True, what bothered me is that the name is hardcoded, but this.vm[this.key] could solve that if I’d really want to do it this way.
