When you create a Vue instance without el, a wrapper div is auto created as its el. See doc: http://vuejs.org/api/instantiation-options.html#el

If you want to preserve the el when destroying a vm, you can do vm.$destroy(true), then manually set vm.$el.innerHTML = ''.

Yes, I'm aware of autocreation of detached node, but I have obviously missed that documentation place describing arguments of $destroy. Now I dug in the code and found the method is delegating to compiler.destroy(), and the last one has noRemove argument. But arguments are not passed to compiler.destroy():

def(VMProto, '$destroy', function () {
    this.$compiler.destroy()
})

I would understand

def(VMProto, '$destroy', function () {
    this.$compiler.destroy(arguments)
})
