In the base class I just added:

created(){
  console.log('parent')
  this._super = this
}

Adding that in allows me to just use this._super.method() if I want to call the base class method so it won't get overwritten. Even if in the child component I add a created hook, everything still works.

Actually, that's dumb and creates a circular reference.

The inheritance model is not entirely prototype based for methods, and it can get a bit verbose...

this._superMethods = this.constructor.super.options.methods
this._superMethods.doSomething.call(this)
