@darobin, I don't know what were the permissions for this repo before, or if/why they were changed.

Three thoughts about that:

• I understand that almost all early adopters like yourself, @plehegar, @dontcallmedom, @tagawa, etc. have access to the repo, even if it's closed. Off the top of my head (and looking at GH settings) I think @tobie can't see this (unfortunately). Can you think of others who don't have access?
• As you say, the API isn't announced, and the Systeam has very good reasons to want it that way, for now. Having an open repo where we discuss all kinds of details in the open, including URLs etc. would be almost equivalent to announcing the API: we would surely get external users, when we are not prepared for that. We are already experiencing this problem with public IRC channels.
• Using GH instead of GitLab still makes sense because all this info and discussions will be public, eventually.

This is temporary because it simply is not ready for announcement and wider use yet and people are stumbling on it.
