django-taggit is an optional dependency of django-modelcluster, and so it isn't specified in setup.py - it's only required if you import modelcluster.contrib.taggit. What error are you getting?

Ok, understood, thanks for your answer. My setup is wrong then, I should explicitly set django-taggit as dependency then.

Maybe that could be listed as an extras_require then? Example:

setup(
     ...
     extras_require={
         'taggit': ['django-taggit>=0.20'],
    },
    ...
)

PS: The error I'm getting is the one raised you defensively raise here.
