That modification should not change anything as smtplib already does almost exactly what you are doing when context is None. See:

Of course it doesn't exactly call create_default_context, it calls _create_unverified_context which is supposedly less strict for backwards compatibility. Does that mean that if we apply your fix it may break mail in other cases?

If so we can't apply this fix directly and we need to add a setting like mail.settings.starttls_args
