In addition, I am not able to specify a path manually in the installer screen after the failed detection.

Workaround: The only way to use the installer was to dump my HKLC-Key, and reimport it in the registry as HKCU.

What OS/Python versions are you using? Is it 64-bit?

What you describe sounds quite a lot like this bug in Python setuptools: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3652625/installing-setuptools-on-64-bit-windows.

Hopefully this is resolved by the new Windows installer in v2.1.1.
