Some more information:

The shelves.list API takes a user ID, which is not the user's selected username. Instead, it's the number that prefixes a user's pages, e.g. https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/XXXXXXXX-user-name. Slightly inconvenient in terms of linking an IRC nick, but not impossible.

Here's how some of the calls using the Goodreads API look:

client = Goodreads.new(api_key: "foobar")

books = client.shelf("XXXXXXXX", "currently-reading").books.map(&:book)

books.each do |book|
  puts book.title

  book.authors.each do |_, author|
    puts author.name
  end
end

Most users should have a currently-reading shelf, but the case where it doesn't exist needs to be handled.
