Here is a different version that you can just load directly via Arduino IDE. Read the code comments, there's a few things to change/check:

Well well, i am not into arduino, but i guess its basicly C code and uses the "setup()" as the init function and "loop()" as the main function.
Controlling the LED is easy, look into file app_httpd.c.
There are two variables called "LEDon" and "FlashOn". search for them in the file to understand the LED control.
The port output is inited in app_httpd_main() at the beginning.

yes i can attest that 5.4V or more powersupply is beneficial.;)

An additional capacitor at 5V to Gnd (not 3.3V as it already has one by default), should help preventing power spikes in wifi transmit. the 1117 regulator does not like sudden drops at the input it seems.
