Is this about getting a markdown serialization result or about markdown editing? While both would be nice I suppose the former could be part of Medium editor and latter supported by other plugins and not part of Medium editor. Seems reasonable to me.

A fast implementation would be to convert the output HTML into markdown.

+1 for this... could use html-md for converting the HTML into markdown... doing this in the browser would be a lighter place to do this, since the browser has most of the functionality already.

Having support to switch between "live-edit" mode, "html" mode, and "markdown" mode would be beneficial with this.

I released Medium Editor Markdwon, an extension that adds Markdown support.

Now it would be very simple to have instead of a pre element, a textarea which will convert markdown to HTML using marked or so.
