Generally speaking this thing just works, but this addon no longer compiles with nginx newer than 1.1x so it doen't need much maintenance.
Personally I use this fork: https://github.com/apcera/nginx-statsd

For Nginx 1.21 I managed to compile the following branch without any issues! Now I could finally update my dated Nginx version.
