I'm going down a rabbit hole here and remembering why simple-commit-message seemed like a good choice at the time.

https://github.com/kentcdodds/validate-commit-msg looks pretty much perfect and fits all the needs of our project:

> validate_commit_msg('fix: something')
true
> validate_commit_msg('build: something')
true
> validate_commit_msg('build(foo/bar): something')
true

However that project is archived, and it is recommended to use commitlint instead. But commitlint seems to be designed primarily for use as a CLI, and trying to use it programmatically means navigating through a maze of numerous subpackages in the @commitlint scope...

I like the idea of following the spec outlined at https://conventionalcommits.org, so we have a common understanding of what we're adhering to.

I hate to say it, but maybe we should just hardcode this list for now?

[
  'build',
  'ci',
  'chore',
  'docs',
  'feat',
  'fix',
  'perf',
  'refactor',
  'revert',
  'style',
  'test'
]

from semantic-pull-requests.
