Remove the ~/steam/ directory too
The commands that are failing for you are:
cd ~/steam/ && curl -sqL "http://media.steampowered.com/client/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz" | tar zxvf -
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file suggests that curl wasn't able to download SteamCMD. Is curl installed ok?
