README

envSetup

Automated Kali Linux environment setup — installs packages, configures remote access, and restores personal tool configurations from this repo.

What it does

Step What gets set up
Packages tmux, openssh-server, xrdp
SSH Enabled and started on port 22
RDP xrdp enabled and started on port 3389
Configs configs/.tmux.conf → ~/.tmux.conf
Burp Suite Installer downloaded or run from kali/, user options and browser profile restored
Wallpaper deps/wall.jpg applied for GNOME or Xfce
Navbar kali/kali-custom-navbar.tar.bz2 restored via dconf or extracted to $HOME

Usage

git clone <repo-url>
cd envSetup
sudo bash setup.sh

Requires root. Run from a desktop session (not headless) so the wallpaper step can reach the display.

Burp Suite

The installer (burpsuite_linux_*.sh) is excluded from git (>100 MB). Download it manually from portswigger.net/burp/releases and place it in kali/ before running setup.sh.

Backing up Burp configs

User options — export from Burp → User options → Export and save to kali/burp_settings_final_v2.json.

Built-in browser profile — run on Kali, then commit the output file:

tar -cjf kali/kali-burp-browser.tar.bz2 \
  -C ~/.BurpSuite/pre-wired-browser \
  --exclude="*.log" \
  --exclude="Code Cache" \
  --exclude="GPUCache" \
  --exclude="ShaderCache" \
  --exclude="blob_storage" \
  Default/Preferences \
  Default/Bookmarks \
  Default/Extensions \
  "Default/Local Extension Settings" \
  "Default/Local Storage"

Navbar backup

Create or update the navbar archive on Kali, then commit it:

# GNOME — dump dconf
dconf dump / > navbar.dconf
tar -cjf kali/kali-custom-navbar.tar.bz2 navbar.dconf
rm navbar.dconf

# Xfce — back up panel config files
tar -cjf kali/kali-custom-navbar.tar.bz2 -C ~ .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml
