🌐 Make This Your Own GitHub Pages Website

This repository contains the source code for Michael Shoemaker's GitHub Pages site.

If you’d like to make your own website using this as a template, you can either use the "Use this template" button on the repo. The video below gives a brief walkthrough.

🚀 1. Fork This Repository

  1. Go to the original repository:
    👉 https://github.com/MichaelShoemaker/michaelshoemaker.github.io

  2. In the top-right corner, click ⭐ Fork.

  3. You’ll now have your own copy at
    https://github.com/<your-username>/michaelshoemaker.github.io


🧩 2. Rename the Repository

To make it your own personal website:

  1. Go to your new repository’s Settings → General.
  2. Scroll down to Repository name.
  3. Rename it to: yourusername.github.io

Example: If your GitHub username is janedoe, rename it to
janedoe.github.io

This automatically tells GitHub Pages to host your site at
👉 https://yourusername.github.io


⚙️ 3. Enable GitHub Pages

If it isn’t already active:

  1. Go to your repo’s Settings → Pages (in the left sidebar).
  2. Under Build and deployment, choose:
  • Source: Deploy from a branch
  • Branch: main
  • Folder: / (root)
  1. Click Save.

After a few moments, your site should appear at your new URL!


🎨 4. Customize Your Site

You now have a working copy of this website!
To personalize it:

  • Edit the _config.yml file — update:
  • title, description, url, and social links
  • Replace any content in .html or .md files with your own text and images
  • Commit and push your changes — GitHub Pages will rebuild automatically

Example from the command line:

git add .
git commit -m "Personalize site"
git push origin main
