Why do we want to use a number field:

1. Because it's a number
2. Because certain devices will expose a keyboard with numbers making the experience seamless.

Some browsers (see IE11 screenshot) allow the user to type a slash. This is likely a better experience in that the user can type as they see fit without the keyboard ignoring their input.

So, we need to allow people to type a slash. They don't have to, but they can if they wish.

Our system should be forgiving.

I gotta say, I've been obsessed with forms since I first came across one. I was trying to get add to basket behaviour working by looking at the source of Amazon or some such site in 2000. No luck etc.

including to uppercase, to lowercase, adding slashes (DD/MM), moving from one field to another, etc
