arcticjs.club's Issues

Summer edition

We need to go somewhere with 24 hour light in the summer. Let's make this the idea / planning thread.

Move to SSL?

Should I move this to Netlify and make it https?

Sysselmannen

So, I think we should get a talk by the governor, because it would be awesome.

Current plan: Go to UNIS tomorrow and see if we can get a room for Wednesday. Then, we'll email the Sysselmann and see if he wants to talk to us about Svalbard for twenty minutes for the first JS conf north of the arctic circle.

Three +1s and I will go through with this plan.

Stickers!

Inspired by this sign:

polar-bear-warning-longyearbyen

We came up with this sticker:

arcticjs

We're going to try our best to get them printed in time for the conference, but it's going to be tricky!

Photos

Could we post links to all the great photos taken at the conference here?

Call for Sponsors

If you'd like to sponsor Arctic JS please read this message.

What is Arctic JS?

Arctic JS is a very unusual conference held in Longyearbyen, Svalbart - the northern most permanent settlement on planet earth - from the 19th to the 21st of January 2016.

Arctic JS is a conference made by and for the participants. In general everyone should expect a high level of audience participation, open discussions, informal workshops and co-hacking.

There will be speakers at the conference, but everyone is invited to present something if they like. So far the known speakers include:

What do we need sponsors for?

We don't make any money by organising the conference as participation is 100% free. Our only expenses so far are stickers with a cost of ca $150.

If we receive more than $150 from sponsors, we'd like to use those money towards giving everyone at the conference an experience of a life time by doing something outdoors. We have a professional guide available who can arrange polar tours (think dog sled, snowmobile etc).

Shelter

🏨 Everybody is responsible to their own accommodation, but if you want to save money use this issue to coordinate with others to share a place or a room.

If you're looking for a roommate, post a comment on this issue.

If you want to book a place, try these sites:

For cheap accommodation try the Gjestehuset 102 hostel.

Speakers

We should have a list of speakers and their topics. Currently, I know that @feross, @mafintosh, @watson all want to walk. I'd like to, too.

Proposal: If you would like to talk, throw your hat in the ring below. If possible, include short abstracts about what you are going to talk about.

ArcticJS vs Arctic JS

What's the official spelling going to be? I'm personally in favour of ArcticJS without a space.

Best meetup/conference ever!

Guys seriously, between the location, down to the name, to how fun you guys looked like you were having on the live streams, I hope this continues on next year and the years after that. I'm definitely down to going to any future ones.

I've been working on a small contracting and product company on the side of my primary job, and I had chosen the name Arcticbyte before this showed up, and I'd definitely be down to sponsoring the next one.

Sincerely Me & Grylls the Polar Bear

Ski trip?

A friend of mine in Trondheim suggested we go on a skip trip, or a short trip.

Here is the one: http://www.poliarctici.com/
I've done a 3 days 2 nights cross country skiing tour. I had my own
gear apart from the tent and sleeping bag.
The guides and the tour were awesome, Id only recommend to check the
sleeping bag. We got -27 and the one I got from the was not warm
enough. Probably some rein deer skin in between the bag and the mat
would do it, so check with them if they have such option in case it is
too cold.

There's nothing offered in January, but maybe we can contact them and ask about a half-day trip or something.

Subarctic train journey

Hey 👋. I just posted a plan for a train journey in Québec, Canada I am planning in the next few weeks over here, if anyone is interested. Posting here as this repo as more watchers. :)

ArcticJS 2017 pre-announcement

Save these dates: December 16th + 17th

We still need to verify that there isn't some other big conference in the city at that time, but if nothing derails this, then it's going to be those dates 😃

@mafintosh and I will probably fly up there on Monday the 11th of December and back on Monday the 18th. Alternatively from Friday the 15th to Friday the 22nd.

I’m interested in coming to Arctic JS

Arctic JS is a casual JS conference in the arctic circle organised by @feross, @mafintosh and @watson.

Location: Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Dates: January 19-21, 2016 (we arrive on the 18th and leave on the 22nd)

Everyone is invited, but keep in mind that you're responsible for you own transport, accommodation, food and polar-:bear:-attack-insurance. There is no formal schedule or speaker list and we'll make the rest up as we go :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Leave a comment on this issue to be kept up to date with Arctic JS news and info.

You can also join the Freenode IRC channel #arcticjs

✈️ How to get there

Svalbard has a population of only 2000 people and is the most northern permanent human settlement in the world.

Normally the cheapest way to fly to Svalbard is to book two return flights:

  1. From wherever you live, book a return ticket to Oslo
  2. Book another return ticket from Oslo to Longyearbyen with Norwegian

A good flight search engine is Google Flights.

🏨 Accommodation

Check out the Shelter issue.

⚠️ Stay safe

Svalbard will be experiencing polar night, i.e. 24 hour darkness.

Bring warm clothing. It is currently -10º C, but January has gotten as cold as -40º C in the past. Be prepared.

If you go outside of the main settlement, you do so at your own risk. There are many potential dangers, including polar bear attacks and avalanches. If you stay in the main settlement, it's probably pretty safe. Be smart.
