flop's Introduction

main-branch Website GitHub release (latest by date)

Floating-point converter for FP32, FP64, FP16, bfloat16, TensorFloat-32 and arbitrary IEEE 754-style floating-point types.

preview

This is a website for hands-on exploration of floating-point types, and a convenience tool for sanity checks and low-level debugging.

Features

  • Decimal to float representation conversion, and vice versa
  • Wide range of IEEE 754-style types, including that of arbitrary exponent and significand width
  • Configurable rounding modes for different use cases (e.g. truncation for deep learning)

Contributing

Please open an issue if you encounter a bug, have questions, or would like to make a suggestion. Pull requests are also welcome.

Local Development

This project will require nodejs and yarn. The following yarn scripts should help you get started on local development.

yarn install

flop's Issues

Add custom bias.

I guss currently the Bias is calculated according to the IEEE 754 Standard: Bias: 2^(NoOfExpBits-1)-1. So with 8bit exponent a bias of 127, or with 5bit a bias of 15.

It would be nice to set a custom bias akin similar to what mentioned in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minifloat , a bias of 2.

Otherwise this is all great and useful for education.

Improve compatibility for web and mobile browsers

Problem

flop looks alright on desktop Chrome, but the input text fields look oversized in Firefox. Other browsers have not even been tested.

On mobile (and presumably tablets too), the interface is entirely broken. The page overflows the screen, text appears at the wrong size, input fields are misaligned. While the app is not meant to run with an optimal experience on mobile browsers, it should at least be usable.

Tasks

Web Browser Compat

  • Add custom CSS for HTML elements for consistent look across browsers
  • Verify page appears as intended on:
    • Chrome
    • Firefox
    • Safari
    • Opera
    • Edge

Mobile Compat

  • Add mobile interface
  • Verify mobile interface appears as intended on:
    • Android tablets
    • Android phones
    • iPads
    • iPhones
