almalinux.org's Issues

RSS feed gone

WP site had RSS feed for blog. We should re-implement a similar one.

RTL Support

Now that Hebrew is fully translated we may need to adjust the design accordingly to display this kind of languages (Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Divehi…) correctly.

CURRENT_GID on mac might render incompatible with a Linux container

My native GID on mac is 20, my UID is 501, there is no specific problem with the UID since it's compatible with Linux but GID of 20 already exists and so I'm getting the current error:

 => ERROR [almalinux_frontend 2/5] RUN groupadd -g 20 web &&     useradd -ms /bin/bash web -g 20 -u 501         0.4s
------
 > [almalinux_frontend 2/5] RUN groupadd -g 20 web &&     useradd -ms /bin/bash web -g 20 -u 501:
#7 0.355 groupadd: GID '20' already exists
#7 0.404 groupadd: GID '20' already exists
------
failed to solve: rpc error: code = Unknown desc = executor failed running [/bin/sh -c groupadd -g ${LOCAL_GID} web &&     useradd -ms /bin/bash web -g ${LOCAL_GID} -u ${LOCAL_UID}]: exit code: 4

Workaround: set it to 501 manually (I just changed shell id -g to shell id -u) in Makefile and the environment starts, I believe we can find a better fix for that :)

Fix profile photo on blog page

Set latest packages to default or give users the preference

Hi!

First off, thanks for all the hard work on AlmaLinux and the super quick updates.

Would it be possible to allow users the ability to set their default module for packages? For example, nginx 1.14 is the default nginx module, however, for certain packages (Phusion Passenger) I need nginx 1.20 to be the default.

Also, if it is set by the repo, would it be possible to make nginx 1.20 the default as nginx 1.14 has been known to have many security vulnerabilities and nginx 1.20 has fixed a lot of those? My team and I have switched over to AlmaLinux 8 as our main production distro from CentOS 7 (because of the EOL). We rely on the nginx 1.20 and Phusion Passenger for our web apps and this new module system has caused some issues in our migration which is why I ask if it is possible to give us the choice for our default module or if you guys could consider setting nginx 1.20 to be the default?

Thanks,
Preet

Blog post new/older links

When displaying a blog post, we should link to newer and older blog posts for ease of navigating. Very rough screenshot as an illustration of what I mean, not at all meant to speak to a specific design.

Add link to the RSS feed on the blog page

As a viewer of almalinux.org/blog there's no indication of where to find the RSS feed. Let's add a link toward the top of the page on the righthand side (see screenshot with example). If the implementation of the RSS feed allows it, let's include additional options (ie: emails) for notifications of updates as well.

Perform a11y review

Now that the web is more or less stable, we should perform a11y review to ensure all parts of the site are a11y-friendly.

Unable to download older versions of Almalinux

I've noticed that older versions of Almalinux are no longer available from all mirrors. This causes issues with tools such as Netboot and prevents installations using these versions.

add contact / official address information

One of my ex-colleagues wrote me today "AlmaLinux head office is located somewhere in Europe? I didn't see this information on the site."

We'll add our legal address as well as a list of ways to connect with us on the website.

Improve membership page

To this page:
https://almalinux.org/foundation/members/

For contributor membership, mirror membership and sponsor member, add extra information (info icon that would show a div on top with the information about particular membership)

The information for each membership category can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/12Hx-LUR6CnLkrj1Guq5rzJgKDK4-_y6NjF5ZN-F0_lo/edit#

under "Categories of Membership" section, inside the tables.
So, for contributor member, we should show only the part of the table related to that.
Screen Shot 2022-04-26 at 7 15 08 PM

For Mirror membership, part related to official mirror member
And of Sponsor member,
Screen Shot 2022-04-26 at 7 14 49 PM
(don't do it as images, properly formated table/text, so it is easy to copy & paste)

Add Membership committee Governance to the website

The board has approved the governance for the membership committee. Let's get it added to the website! This should look like the by-laws, and include this at the bottom:

The current membership committee meetings happen every two weeks at 10am Eastern US time. If you have questions for the membership committee, feel free to ask questions in the #membership channel, or reach out to us directly!!

Adjust content based on feedback

Some additional feedback to incorporate after we relaunch, all from the fantastic @iseletsk.

Objective

For AlmaLInux OS to succeed, it needs to be sponsored by a diverse set of stakeholders, and not depend on a single source of revenue. It is also important that no single entity represents more than 50% of AlmaLinux.org’s revenue. As such, we want to increase the participation of corporate members sponsoring AlmaLinux, as well as solicit donations from individuals.

Possible Improvements in order to help achieve that goal:

Page: https://almalinux.org/contribute/

This page should be expanded to offer additional information/direction for ways to find entry points for new ecosystem contributors and should be updated to include ways to become a financial contributor as well.

We should add a clear link to “Sponsor AlmaLinux” that would go to the page (sponsorship) with the link to
“Corporate Sponsor Member” application/details, as well as “Donate” button for (Linking to GH sponsors and opencollective) where people can just donate if they would like to.

The page should clearly outline the benefits of sponsorship (table from here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12Hx-LUR6CnLkrj1Guq5rzJgKDK4-_y6NjF5ZN-F0_lo/edit

Page: https://almalinux.org/foundation/members/

We should add a “benefits” link/page for each sponsorship level, so people know what they are getting into.
It would be basically this:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/12Hx-LUR6CnLkrj1Guq5rzJgKDK4-_y6NjF5ZN-F0_lo/edit but easily accessible/as a page?

We should also display logos of current sponsor-members on the membership page (and their sponsorship level)
CloudLinux, SineNoMine, KnownHost
Because the number of sponsor members is so low, I would add all the sponsors (from the bottom of this page: almalinux.org) but put them in the “sponsor” blog, without the “member” part.

Add Slovak language for translation

Hello,
I'd like to translate Almalinux website to Slovak (sk) language, please add it, so I can start translating it in weblate. I have experiences with translation for projects like Fedora and KDE.

Remove JIRA from WWW workflows

There really seems no need for JIRA in web presence workflows. We shall remove JIRA from WWW presence mgmt workflows and rely on GH issues and MM.

  1. Update CONTRIBUTING.md
  2. Update other docs

Add link to membership guidelines & bylaws to membership page

On membership page: https://almalinux.org/foundation/members/

In this text:
The merit of each application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Board or by a committee appointed for this purpose, according to the Bylaws established by the Board.

link "Bylaws" to https://almalinux.org/p/foundation-bylaws/

Add a line after that text:
Membership guidelines are available here

Add a link to PDF https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xYkib2FECMoVy5olG9R9audYfGXpOLjf/view?usp=sharing

Add events page to website

I've created a google calendar for us to track and share events that AlmaLinux will be at. I'd also like to get this added to the website. The updates would include:

  • a top-level navigation menu item named 'events and meetups'
  • this page would be an embed of this calendar that says "where to find us!", and an option to subscribe to the calendar
  • It should also include a place for folks to submit a request for us to join them at an event. That can be as simple as a form that asks for the following things and emails them to [email protected]: the name of the event, the location, the dates, whether it's in-person or virtual, information about non-profit sponsorship opportunities that might be available, their email address, and a contact for the event itself.

Add authors to blog

I was thinking about what we can do to help expand the involvement of the community, and some folks really enjoy getting credit when they’re contributing. One way to make it obvious when we have community contributions to the blog would be to add an author name/bio/image to our blog template, and then encourage/invite folks to write blogs about the stuff they’re working on/seeing/whatever in the AlmaLinux/RHEL space.

Feed is hard to use

On the blog page, there is a "RSS Feed" button. Clicking it in firefox causes the XML for the RSS to download to my computer...which isn't very useful.

I don't seem to be able to right-click and say "Copy Link" like I can with normal links...which is what I want, so that I can paste it into my RSS reader.

Improve Ryzen certification page

  1. Please add the word processors to “ The conducted tests ensure that AMD Ryzen™ 5000 series CPUs and, generally for any servers based on Ryzen, XXXXXXXX OS work properly guaranteeing stability, security, and high performance.” Should read: “The conducted tests ensure that AMD Ryzen™ XXXX series CPUs and, generally for any servers based on Ryzen processors, XXXXXXXX OS work properly guaranteeing stability, security, and high performance.”

  2. The block below should be update to look similar to

“Certification for: AMD Ryzen™ 5000 processor series (or 3000 and 5000 processor series).
image005

  1. Is it just the 5000 series or both 5000 and 3000 series of Ryzen supported by OSes? Please pay attention - on the AlmaLinux page it first mentions both the 5000 and 3000 series and then says that the certification is only for the the 5000 series.

  2. Please change Request system image for test to the plural form (“for tests”) and would also be great to have the system test PDFs available for download
    unnamed (5)

  3. Change RyzenTM to Ryzen™ in the title of the Almalinux page

  4. Vertically align the text and icons on the AlmaLinux page:
