Editing the contents of an existing file in the watchdir where the filename has an extension (.txt or similar)

Desired behavior:

The existing div for this file changes contents to reflect the new file contents

Observed behavior:

A new div is created with the same ID and the new file contents

Additional notes

Divs are detected by using a jquery selector to search for an ID constructed from a filename. When there is a file extension, the . makes jquery start looking for both an id and a class, which it can't find - so another duplicate div is created.

This could be fixed by ditching jquery (it's totally overkill considering all it's used for is to get an element by ID...)
