github-repo-size's Issues

Breaks layout when symlinks are encountered

When a symlink is encountered anywhere in the repository the extension fails to calculate the size of that file. When this happens on the top-level of a repository the table breaks as well.

Example:
https://github.com/EIGHTFINITE/jdownloader-portable

Several things to point out:

1. The symlink LICENSE.txt doesn't receive an additional table cell and is missing its size. It should be 48 Bytes.
2. The directory jump Please refer to Other/Source with only a single symlink below it correctly gets the table cell but shows .... It should be 38 Bytes.
3. Navigating into the directory jump shows similar results with the first step showing ... and the second step showing nothing at all.

Plugin not working if current page has git submodule

Describe the bug
The plugin is not rendering the size tab nor the size of other files when there's a submodule in page. I did not test if this also exists in sub folders of a repo, but it does not show size in the main page.

To Reproduce

1. Goto https://github.com/frida/frida/
2. The size is not showing

Expected behavior
I guess it should just ignore the submodule size?

Placement of the Total Size Element

Currently the total size element is shown at the very top at the page. This was intentional as then it is always visible when navigating around a repo's page. However, we should consider also displaying it at more intuitive places on the repo's home page. As a side-note the element is currently by mistake inside the settings li element. File Explorer Styling

The Issue

On the initial load using the GitHub file explorer, the transition to include sizes is relatively smooth. When navigating in the file tree, the updating of the DOM for sizes takes a moment which results in jittering due to there being more columns than there is content to fill.

Progress

To address this, I added quite extensive CSS which fixed the problem but reintroduced others like columns not being consistently wide and overflow ellipsis not applying. I have since moved these styles from main to the branch file-explorer-styling.

Without styles on redirect before sizes are loaded (date is shifted to the left due to missing elements)

With styles (columns are unaligned)

Without styles after sizes are loaded (looking adequate, could be better)

Include in readme which permission in token needs to be turned on to view size of private repositories

Suggesting a few changes to the readme:

• State that fine-grained tokens are used. not classic tokens.
• State the permissions required by the token.

might try to do this myself later. but im currently occupied.

Safer DOM manipulations

Currently we rely on very hacky selectors and manipulations on the DOM. For this project to be easier to maintain, we should make these more reliable.

Display the Git-Repository size instead of total file size (or both?)

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
It would be nice to know the total size of a Git repository before starting to clone. However, currently, the extension only displays the total size as considered by all files currently in the selected branch (afaik). This means that it is useful for knowing the approximate size of Download code as zip, but not for the git repo itself.

Describe the solution you'd like
I'd want to see the entire size instead.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Looking at the API manually is not nice.

Support Submodules

Currently we are not calculating the size of git submodules.

Haven't looked into implementing this yet. PRs welcome.

Support a default branch

Currently when we fetch and don't have a branch specified in the url, we fetch from the 'main' branch. Because the default branch may be called something other than 'main', this can cause the API to not find the relevant information for adding size to the repo home page.

The default branch can be retrieved by calling the repo endpoint with GitHub's API.

Unable to get the default branch of private repo

Describe the bug
If accessing a private repo with the default branch is not "main". The repo size cannot be displayed. But with the branch specified in the URL, the size can be correctly displayed.

I found if there is no branch in the URL, it still sends requests to query the size of the "main" branch. And the repo info API returns 404.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Open a private repo with the default branch is not "main"
2. The extension cannot display the size of repo
3. Add the default branch in URL
4. The extension can display the size of repo

Expected behavior
The size of repo be correctly displayed.

Platform:

• OS: Windows
• Browser: Chrome
• Version: 120

Additional context
I guess the problem may be related to the GitHub token is not used when sending requests to repo info API. It makes the private repo not accessible.

Port to browser API from chrome API for a wider browser compatibility

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
The "github-repo-size" extension currently relies on the Chrome API, limiting its compatibility to Chrome-based browsers. This poses a problem for users who prefer other browsers and would like to use the extension.

Describe the solution you'd like
I propose transitioning the extension from the Chrome API to the more universal browser API. This change would enhance compatibility, allowing users to enjoy the "github-repo-size" extension across a broader range of browsers.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Maintaining two versions of the extension, one for Chrome and another for browsers that support the browser API natively.

🐞 Fix Repo Page File Sizes

It seems like the new main repo page is no longer feature preview but the default setting. This means that sizes for individual files and folders on the main page of a repo are broken currently.

The legacy project this was inspired by also had this issue: harshjv/github-repo-size#50.
