Terraform Provider for JIRA

terraform-provider-jira

Terraform Provider for creating, updating and deleting JIRA issues. This can be used to interlink infrastructure management with JIRA issues closely.

Install

• Download terraform-provider-jira binary from Github
• Unzip the zip file
• Then move terraform-provider-jira binary to $HOME/.terraform.d/plugins directory

mkdir -p $HOME/.terraform.d/plugins
mv terraform-provider-jira $HOME/.terraform.d/plugins/terraform-provider-jira

• Run terraform init in your terraform project

terraform init

Used to initialize the plugin

Example Usage

Set JIRA URL, Username and Password using environment variables

export JIRA_URL=http://localhost:8080
export JIRA_USER=username
export JIRA_PASSWORD=password

Create terraform config file

resource "jira_issue" "example" {
  assignee    = "anubhavmishra"
  reporter    = "anubhavmishra"

  issue_type  = "Task"

  // description is optional  
  description = "This is a test issue"
  summary     = "Created using Terraform"

  project_key = "PROJ"
}

Run terraform init

terraform init

Initializing provider plugins...

Terraform has been successfully initialized!

You may now begin working with Terraform. Try running "terraform plan" to see
any changes that are required for your infrastructure. All Terraform commands
should now work.

If you ever set or change modules or backend configuration for Terraform,
rerun this command to reinitialize your working directory. If you forget, other
commands will detect it and remind you to do so if necessary.

Run terraform plan

terraform plan

Check if the terraform plan looks good

Run terraform apply

terraform apply

Rationale

Working in Operations engineering organizations infrastructure is often driven by tickets. Why not track infrastructure using tickets but this time we will use code. This just showcases that you can pretty much Terraform anything!

Is this expected to work on Jira cloud too?

Jira - Create project

Hi,

I have a requirement to automation project creation in Jira via terraform. below are my use cases

1. new project
2. add role to project (r/w/a)
3. remove role from project
4. delete project

Can you pl. help me here on how to do this as current version of go library doesn't support this feature.
Should i write my own go file to accomplish this ?

More complex scenarios

Can you create an example with some more complexity, like a User Story with some subtasks, or an Epic with tasks associated with it?
I tested this module and it works as expected, I'd just like to have some other examples of usage in the real world, during the life cycle of the JIRA ticket.

Have you thought about adding users and giving them permissions etc. in terraform, like you can in github, rather than just managing tickets?

jira provider error

Hi Anubhav,

excellent provider code created to connect jira.

I have installed local Jira trail version and also terraform standalone setup in my system.

Also installed jira CLI and my objective is to run remote-exec to call jira api commands like create project.
I have configured environment variables like user, password, jira url etc and copied jira provider binary too.
but getting below error when try to do terraform plan

File is copied to this location but still somehow it fails, my final objective is to run jira cli commands from terraform, is that possible ??

JIRA_USER vs JIRA_USERNAME

The readme says
export JIRA_USERNAME=user
but the config module uses JIRA_USER:
