web's Issues

Add instructions on how to contribute to documentation to the website

In the ApacheFriends website, in the instructions on how to contribute, make sure there are clear instructions for how to contribute to the documentation. That should include links to the https://github.com/ApacheFriends/web and https://github.com/ApacheFriends/web-static repositories, and instructions that changes should be made to the Middleman sources upstream in the /web repo, and instructions for how to get changes accepted and pushed out to the website.

Background: I just noticed two things I wanted to fix about the website, I followed what instructions I could find, and I ended up at the wrong repo (/web-static instead of /web). The purpose of this task is to save the next person from making the mistake I made.

Clarify instructions for OS X downloads

The default option would be the native installer (based on x86_64) that is also supported on OS X M1.

  • There are incompatibility issues with OS X VM and OS X 13.x (Ventura).
  • This project uses Hyperkit that at this moment does not support M1 (ARM processor).

Clarify macOS (OS X) options in download.html

Apply the changes of ApacheFriends/web-static#4 here, to the upstream Middleman source files. Then propagate to the web-static files. That Pull Request says,

Clarify the difference between native and VM packages for macOS in download page.

Add a paragraph explaining the difference between native installation and VMs. Clearly announce that VM option does not support M1 (arm64) CPUs. In the macOS title listing the 6 versions, add "native" and "VM" clarification. In each download entry, add "native" and "VM" clarification phrases.

In the System Requirements text, clarify that native installers require x64 or arm64, but that VM requires x64 and does not support arm64.

Disable newsletter and irc

IRC is no longer in use.
Disable the newsletter temporarily until there is a good service to host it.

Deprecate XAMPP VM

The OS X installer uses x86_64 binaries that are supported by the OS X Rosetta environment.

The XAMPP VM is not compatible with latest OS X M1 or M2 (ARM processor). The OS X Rosetta environment does not translate Virtual Machine apps that virtualize x86_64 computer platforms.

XAMPP Dashboard Refresh!

Our UI automatically detects any projects and directories within your root directory, making it easy to manage your work. Plus, we've included an automated auto-detection for popular frameworks like WordPress, Laravel, and Symfony. We've gone the extra mile to provide a visually appealing and intuitive interface that's easy to navigate, so you can spend more time coding and less time searching for files. And with a responsive design, you can access our UI on any device.

As I don't see your dashboard on GitHub please direct me where to push the pull request!

Add Mac VM FAQs related to arm64 non-support

Apply the changes of ApacheFriends/web-static#5 here, to the upstream Middleman source files. Then propagate to the web-static files. That Pull Request says,

Add two new FAQs to the faq_stackman.html page (for macOS VM FAQs):

Q: Does XAMPP-VM support Apple M1 (arm64) CPUs? A: No.

Q: When I try to start the VM, it fails, with an error message, "cannot calculate MAC address". How do I resolve this?
A1: VMs do not work on arm64 CPUs.
A2: If you see this message on intel (x64) CPUs, contact the community forums.
