maybe tape echo is just adding random modulations to the delays?
(also need to add vibrato as i thought, this is just slow pitch oscillation, or for a sample the modulation of the playback rate)

The actual saturation curve depends on the tape material, but usually it's some sort of soft-clip sigmoid or double sigmoid (eg. there might be some cross-over distortion too). Magnetic saturation then usually has some hysteresis (not sure how significant this is for tape) and some stochastic "quantisation" thanks to the finite number of particles in the media, so your tape machine would typically add some high frequency signal (eg. 100kHz or higher) as "bias" to try to negate these effects and the bias signal actually has non-trivial effect on the saturation; it's actually pretty obvious even with a simple wave-shaper.

need pitch info, note on, note off (not bothering with velocity for now because it's usually clunky)

this may allow the more efficient use of samples which would allow pattern expressions where different samples could be invoked like notes on a keyboard

maybe something like sample = play + record-start and at end of pattern playback record-stop

give the sample a unique name

allow the sample to be reloaded into a sample instrument, which also allow the dynamic creation of tracks

in this way more complex arrangements could be made
