There is a Virtual ][ emulator for MacOS that
features a disk drive sound that's pretty accurate
and really adds to the whole experience of
emulation. To me it makes a big difference and
actually makes me FEEL like I'm using a real Apple
II. I've compaired loading sounds with the
emulator and a real Apple and it's pretty much
right-on... I'm crazy enough to have memorized
quite a few booting sound patterns.... especially
the Electronic Arts 'Clickity-Click'! ..... Yeah I'm sad

Would something like that be possible with
AppleWin as I feel that a feature that everyone
would appreciate!

Thanks

Problem with the game Karateka and new video mode

I have tried to play Karateka.
There are two problems.

  • The first one, the game is extremly slow in full screen (even in window mode) compared to Applewin 1.12.6
  • The second one, in fullscreen, with the new option "Color Half shift" actived, the sound is horrible. It crackles.

When using the prodos Merlin assembler (v2.58) the only
way out of full-screen editor mode is OA-Esc (or
Alt-Esc to AppleWin). Unfortunately, this keystroke is
eaten by windows and presumably AppleWin never sees it.

Is there a work-around for this? Or could you add an
option to replace Alt-Esc with another keystroke? Come
to think of it, it might be nice to have the ability to
reassign any keystrokes, I'm sure Merlin isn't the only
program that uses esc key combinations that are used by
Windows.

I'm using Vista, if that's any help.

slowdown after resuming from standby

Submitted By: mmphosis
Category: 1.12.9.1

I leave AppleWin running, click on Start, Turn Off Computer, and Stand By. The computer goes to sleep, I wake it up and go back into AppleWin and it has slowed down! To test that AppleWin has slowed down, I usually press ConTRoL-G (Bell) to make the Apple II beep, but after Stand By, the AppleWin beep sounds like very long buzzer sound -- and thus I am assuming the emulator has slowed down. Other operations in the emulator are slow as well.

AppleWin version 12.9.1 and a few prior versions do the same thing. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

Support for externat charsets and other ROM files
will be extremely useful.
Now I have to replace the charset4.bmp file, using
ResourceHacker or a similar program, in order to
emulate Pravetz8 (the Bulgarian clone of Apple2,
supporting cyrrilic letters).
Also, I would like to use the original Pravetz ROM-
there are some differences rom the one of Apple2.

[From news-group?]

The Tab and Esc keys are blocked system wide when AppleWin is running.

This is unfortunate as I'm using a Norton Commander clone in Windows for nearly all file handling and the Tab key switches between both file windows and the Esc key quits the file viewer.

Alt-Tab works, however.

TF (Trace File) command broken (partially)

BerliOS Bug #8357

Date: 2006-August-12 15:35
Submitted By: win32mfc
Category: none
Bug Group: none
Assigned To: mpohoreski
Priority: 5

Looks like the TF (Trace File) command doesn't quite work correctly.

In Debug.cpp, the OutputTraceLine() function is responsible for writing the trace information. It calls DrawDisassemblyLine() and DrawFlags() to get the flags and disassembly text.

Unfortunately, the DrawDisassemblyLine() no longer returns the text (the "text" parameter is unreferenced in the function now), so (basically) garbage is written to the trace file where the disassembly line text should be.

Also, the DrawDisassemblyLine() function renders to the screen now, so when you issue a "G" to run the emulator, the top of the apple II screen displays the disassembly at the top of the screen.

Suggested Fix: Create a new function, GetDisassemblyLineText( char* text) that just returns the text, without any rendering.

I will try and make this fix in my copy of the source, as I am working on a Trace Socket command along with a seperate app that listens and analyzes the trace output.

More accurate save state

Hello,

What do you think about adding the possibility to
create save state with the name of the disk image loaded

For example, I am playing to Lode Runner (Lode Runner.dsk)
Pressing F11 or another key would create an file named
Lode Runner.aws
Now, if I change the image disk (MoonPatrol.dsk),
pressing Ctrl+F12 would load MoonPatrol.aws (if it exists)
Like that, there is not risk to erase accidently our
"unique" save state named SaveState.aws and it is more
user friendly than always changing the name of the save
state we want to load.

I hope you have understand what I would like.
More, I am sure it is not really hard to code since you
already have the code to save a state.

The top of the top should be to have several slot for
our save state (0 to 9)
We could select our slot by pressing Ctrl+F11 and then
pressing F11 to save the state.
If I have choose the slot 3 for example, I will have a
save state named Lode Runner - 3.aws

I really hope you could add this functionality.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Applewin appears outside of the screen

Submitted By: skirby
Category: 1.13.2

Priority: 5

Hello,

I have done some stupid tests with Applewin 1.3.12 and I have found a small "bug"
Start Applewin and move the window on the left of the screen (simply move a small piece of the Applewin windows outside of the screen)
Now close Applewin.
Restart Applewin => it does not appear on the screen (it is outside of the screen)
Trying to move it on the screen is really hard because the contextual menu (by right click on the task bar on Applewin) does not correctly.

I think that the simple way to correct that is to make Applewin appear always on the middle of the screen.

You can see an example of the Applewin window when I managed to make it reappear on the screen.

I hope you could fix it.

Thanks and have a nice day.

I notice the behavior with running Maniac Mansion is still present, where if you simply select the Disk 1 and then start the emulator, it will get stuck shortly after accessing the disk drive for a moment. But if, after selecting Disk 1, I start the debugger and then issue the "G" command, it runs just fine.

Letter traces on screen with 80 columns

Submitted By: zosite
Category: Pre-1.12.8

Assigned To: tomch
Priority: 5

Some texts left traces of their letters on screen in 80 columns mode. It occurs since AppleWin 1.12.9.0 AFAIK. In 1.12.6.0 it doesn't; that's for sure.

One easy way to reproduce it:

  1. Run the Classic ProDOS User's Disk.
  2. Go to Applesoft BASIC mode.
  3. Turn on 80 columns mode with PR#3
  4. Run the program HYPNOSIS.
  5. Exit the program with ESC.
  6. Press ENTER and... voilá! Screen messed up!

By the way... It can be solved entering and exiting the debugger or moving the cursor over the right panel in full-screen.

Another way to reproduce it:

  1. Download the "Silvern Castle" HDV image from www.syndicomm.com/~finksterj/SilvernCastle/ and run it.
  2. After following the instructions to decompress the game files and running the game, choose the "[?]" option in the main menu to access the library.
  3. Try reading any of the three documents. Doh!

Would it be possible to permit the window size to be

As screen resolutions continue to increase, it would be
nice to be able to scale the window from 1x up to 4x

It would be nice to have a Speech ROM emulated.
In old days, I had a mockingboard with Speech
ROM and it was amazing to hear voice
conversations in Ultima series at the time.

A "disk image" explorer (file manager) for .hdv, .dsk,
.po ...etc.

  1. can detect the format of the disk image (DOS, PRODOS)

  2. filter out non-disk image files

  3. remember the disk image folder

  4. can handle archived images such as GZ, ZIP and RAR

At this moment the debugger just switch between
emulation, how about move debugger to other window,
keep the original Apple display, so programmers can
debug more easily (just like other PlayStation emulator
did)

Alternative monochrome video mode

[Originally in an email from: The Rink]

An alternate video mode that simulates the black
horizontal lines between pixels would be nice. You
know how on those old monochrome monitors, horizontally
adjacent pixels would appear joined, but vertically
adjacent pixels would still have a thin black space
between them? I wouldn't want to lose the normal
monochrome mode to support this, but an additional
monochrome mode that did this would be really cool. As
trivial as it sounds, I've found that monochrome lo-res
graphics look strikingly different in AppleWin due to
the fact that the colored dots have only vertical
lines, not vertical and horizontal lines
crisscrossing through each 8x8 "pixel."

It would be easy to do: since each "Apple II" pixel is
really made up of a 2x2 square of PC pixels, all you
have to do is eliminate one of the two rows.

I'm using a program that has some key combinations that require that both the open-apple and closed-apple keys be pressed at the same time with a key (i.e. open-apple + closed-apple + q). This works on a real Apple II.

Applewin close itself

Hello,

I have reproduced this bug only on Windows 2000 sp4 (not on Windows XP sp2)
It is easy to reproduce.
Simply start Applewin and go in full screen
Now click on start button (master.dsk is load)
Click on Drive 1 button and click on the cancel button of the open dialog box => Applewin close itself without error message.

There is no problem if I do that in window mode.

Can you reproduce this behavior?

Thanks and have a nice day.

[From news-group?]

When running any program, when I go to reset the machine by clicking on the Apple logo again, it never seems to reset cleanly and a bunch of garbage usually starts cycling through the screen.

Hello,

What do you think about adding the possibility to
temporaly speed up the emulation by pressing a key.

It could be really useful:

  • to skip long scene or introduction in a game
  • to speed up the emulator when it loads a rom

I hope you could add this feature.

Have a nice day

AppleWin installed in path with spaces

BerliOS Bug #7231

Date: 2006-April-22 14:04
Submitted By: tomch
Category: 1.12.9.0
Bug Group: none
Assigned To: tomch
Priority: 5

Repro steps:

  1. Unzip the AppleWin.ZIP distribution and place in a path with spaces,
    e.g.: C:\Emulation\Apple II\AppleWin1.12.9.0
  2. Run AppleWin, then exit.
  3. Try to double-click on a .DSK file

Result:

Windows cannot find 'C:\Emulation\Apple II\Disk Images\Airheart.dsk'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the Start button, and then click Search.

Reason:

Look in the registry:

HKCR\DiskImage\shell\open\command
(Default) = C:\Emulation\Apple II\AppleWin1.12.9.0\Applewin.exe %1

Note that the path name doesn't have quotes - without this DDE won't work.

Fix:

AppleWin should be populating the regkey with quotes around the path of the
executable, e.g.:

(Default) = "C:\Emulation\Apple II\AppleWin1.12.9.0\Applewin.exe" %1

Fixing the regkey manually doesn't work, since AppleWin slams it on next
launch.

You also want quotes around the "%1". It's possible to be confused by
spaces in the file argument too.
