the-heir's Issues

Create three additional tenants that illustrate different approaches to handling baggage

Add secondary foils to Tom. Many options are available to Tom for handling his predicament. Most of them end unhappily. Secondary foils have taken these approaches and illustrate what might happen to Tom if he follows them.

Some ideas for breaking down the three characters:

  • Super Ego, Ego, Id (or in Eric Berne's terminology, Parent, Adult, Child)
  • Preacher, Fighter, Provider (three estates)

Installation instructions for MacOS

Describe process and package names under port(1).

Things to note: make --> gmake
aspell-dict-en
py27-pip
gtk2

pip27 install ...

pypa/pip#113: /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin

pandoc .pkg

Move git commands to OS-neutral section
Add a note on make targets and resulting files.

Establish Tom as an investigator

Tom notices discrepancies in people's stories. This skill helps him catch petty thieves in his work, among other things. This skill is vital in Act II when he pieces together the story of his family.

Dwight's Story Not Realistic

"Dwight the defaulter, makes his problems other people's. Dwight thinks he will live forever, so he can defer decisions indefinitely. Dwight is years behind on his rent. He's had a double lock on his unit so long, everyone assumed he abandoned it. Now that the yard is closing, Dwight shows up and tries to haggle his stuff back."

That's not a realistic description of what happens to people who don't pay their self-storage rent. After defaulting on rent, there’s a set period of time between going into default and going off to auction, which is usually between 30-90 days. Dwights stuff would have been long gone.

Scene files etc.

Ari,
Would you create a scene file for each character so that new suggestions can be posted?
Also I have tried commiting directly to the master, but I am restricted from doing so and end up creating more new branches...mostly by mistake. oops.

Skeletons in the suitcase

What are the issues stuffed deepest into the storage unit? In a way, it's less important what they are--what's important is how Tom (and Tom's family) relates to them.

Some ideas about embarrassing relatives:

  • A cross-dresser: a sack full of dresses that look too big to be grandma's. And grandpa's arrest record... back in the day you got in trouble for that sort of thing.
  • A Brony. A box full of My Little Ponies

I want to stay away from political stuff--and also from period-specific stuff. It both dates the film and narrows the universality of its appeal.

Anna the Amnesiac

Anna is an elderly woman who stores nothing at all in her storage unit, her unit is empty. She keeps paying rent on the unit and keeps coming back to it but has no idea why.

Tom's Family Tree

Construct a family tree for Tom. This is what he pieces together in the course of act II.

Dwight the Deadbeat

Dwight abandoned his storage unit a long time ago, and it sat for ages. The yard had several empty units so the landlord was not worried about selling it and forgot about it. Manny sold it without notifying the landlord, and Dwight wants his stuff back.

save a cat

Add an endearing episode of Tom being nice to people right after we introduce him. Maybe he hands a toy from his locker to a neighbor's kid, or helps an old lady load stuff into her car. One sentence at the front of act I.

Ben the Buyer

Benny buys other peoples storage units, other peoples problems. He thinks all of his own stuff is worthless, and by extension anything he buys becomes worthless to him when he owns it. But he always thinks everyone else's stuff is better than his, so he keeps buying more. He wouldn't be a member of a club that would have him as a member.

Continuous Delivery

It is desirable to compile binaries (PDFs now, video going forward) on every commit. Right now, only the sources are available online; we must email PDFs to people outside the project who cannot build their own. (CD: continuous delivery)

Additionally, it is desirable to run validity checks (e.g. spellcheck) on every commit. (CI: continuous integration)

Bookshelves

Need shelves for Tom's unit. Ideally old and cheap-looking. If someone on CL is selling and willing to deliver, we might pay for that.

Tom's longing for large, extended family

Tom grew up without an extended family, mostly even with one parent at a time. He envies people with large family gatherings, lots of cousins and big families. Act I establishes this wish.

In Act II, Tom traces his family tree and resolves his confusion about who is who and how they relate to him. He comes to associate different artifacts from the storage unit with specific family members. He uses magnets on the inside of his metal storage unit to trace the family tree. This growing tree shows the passage of time.

In Act III, Tom reaches out to living family members to pick up their artifacts. Everyone shows up on the same weekend and they have a picnic or a party in the storage yard--without planning it, Tom created the family reunion he always dreamed of. Some of the cousins may even provide additional insight into family history. When Drake shows up to pick up his stuff, he drops into the middle of this gathering; when he tries to bully Tom, he finds the entire family staring at him--Tom has brought them together and they are his friends. Drake's overthrow is the more complete for this public aspect.

Piano

We are looking to borrow or rent or buy a baby grand piano for Claire's unit--in that order of preference. Need to figure out logistics of moving the piano in and out.

There are a number of candidates on Craigslist:

Baby Grand Piano -- 1940 Lester Antique - $499 (Van Alstyne): "Beautiful 1940 Lester Baby Grand piano (54"). [..] I am a technician who bought this and worked on it, and it would need minimal work once moved into the home. Contact me through CL or the Martin Piano Services website (google us)."
Free Baby Grand Piano (Corinth): "Free baby grand piano. Has all ivory keys. Needs work to be in playable condition. Has all pieces including bench. In good condition to be used as a decorative piece. Approximately 100 years old."
$250 (west fort worth): "Steger and Sons baby grand piano. Measures 4'10" at widest point. Has a great sound! Needs some work on the sustain pedal and needs refinishing. I purchased it about 6 years ago as an art piece in my house. Will consider reasonable offers."

STORAGE SHED ITEMS for Hannah the Hoarder

I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this, but here goes:
Some of the images I saw I think will really work for Hannah:
From the image files of Crowley 03/30/18

  • #7613
  • #7619, but with more and a path that leads in and out.
  • #7624, the tub filled with direct mail. It really says it all.

From the Props images:

  • 20180327 182517, the handcuffs are just odd enough to make you wonder even more about Hannah.
    -20180404 15029, the globe.
    20180404 151842
    20180404 151910

Taking from the vinyl props would be good. Also, 78's and 45's. I have some of those if needed.

I did love the abandoned storage shed that had the sports car in it. It would be a wonderful contrast to the rundown car that she drives.

Penny the Pianist

Content of Unit: Baby Grand Piano inherited from her grandmother.
Background: She wants to be like her fabulous grandmother who was upper class and entertained guests with her piano. For the grandmother the piano represented a lifestyle that Penny is attempting to recapture. Penny's lifestyle does not support a piano but she talks about how one day she will have a house that will. Fetch is not happening.
Arc: She comes to recognize that the fabulous piano belongs in an era that is not coming back, that in her lifetime Penny needs to make her own fabulous, instead of recycling other peoples.

Inventory personalized props

Many of our props have names and years engraved on them. We need a list of these name so we can

  1. Insert these names into Tom's family tree
  2. Fill frames with appropriate photos

Establish Tom as a hipster

Add artifacts to Tom's character description that show his longing for history. Tom doesn't know his own history so he tries to fake it until he makes it. He is trying to create an idealized background for what he believes to be a respectable person's story. He is he trying too hard, and this postcard tale was always fake to begin with. Tom is trying to tell a story that will lead others to make assumptions but not ask questions.

Examples of objects he owns may include

  • pocket watch
  • station wagon
  • mid-century furniture
  • vinyl
  • early video games

Harry the Hoarder

Harry has found an exciting new deal on a bigger, better storage unit nearby! His storage unit is bursting and he is so relieved he found this great deal. He is going to pack up everything and move it over, and best of all he will have room for more stuff.

Drake's attempt to undo Tom's progress

@DaltonElza @Theatreham I really liked the idea that came up on Friday that Drake would try to undo Tom's progress by filling the unit with more stuff.

I'm writing this scene, and I'm having a hard time finding words for Drake to justify his actions. His real motivation is to bur the stuff he doesn't want to deal with, but nominally he had asked Tom to find it.

How can we show this contradiction through Drake's dialogue?

I don't think you're going to find anything in here.

Tom's Arc

Before:
Tom is a hipster. He wears skinny jeans, beanies, a plaid shirt, sweater vest and a pocket watch. He is a shift manager at a used books and records store. He has no positive relationships, no friends, girlfriend or family besides Drake, he is alone. His turbulent upbringing has left him feeling that he would make an inadequate father, thus he has no desire for children. He wants to be like Manny, and indirectly like Drake. He wishes he had their confidence and their ease with people and conversation.

After:
Tom adopts a more refined style. He wears business casual slacks and a sports jacket. He has accepted a job as a corporate manager, employee training, at a distance location. He has found his extended family and has surrounded himself by new friends and a girlfriend. He realizes he is now mature enough to start a family of his own. With his newfound confidence he realizes the nuisances Manny and Drake are.

Science Kits

Tom finds a stack of old science kits for kids that he had acquired as gifts in his childhood. The kits were never used but seem to be opened. The boxes all said "adult supervision" and there were never any adults willing to supervise young Tom. There can be a moment where Claire and Tom share in these experiments.
