Bomberman sounds like a sweet idea, sorry I'm just jumping in now.
Those of you with game-building experience, could any of you recommend topics for me to read up on? I'm a CS grad with experience in C/Java/HTML/SQL/JavaScript/PHP/ect ect but I don't have any practical experience applying it to game design. Not sure where to start. So, suggestions are very much welcome.

Just plain JavaFX your planning to build bomberman? Or are you planning to use OpenGL for graphics? And how big do you want to build this game too?
from aidos.
Plain simple simple 2D game, I would not want to focus much on graphics. I am not yet sure about the size of game and features that it will have. It will depend on how many people are actively participating in building it.

I am more interested in chat client idea. But, I don't have any problems with the other two either. Btw, how many people do we have right now?
from aidos.
I'd like to help. Maybe we can write a chat client that uses irc. Then after that we can make the server.

I am not sure so far about 10 people have replied to the post I made on reddit. Lets see how many of them actually come and join us.

I'm down for anything and I also like the chat client idea! I was thinking, at least if we were going to do a chat client, that it could be in the browser via a chrome extension. I could be game for anything, to be honest. I've really been wanting to collaborate with people on something for a while now.

Iām down. I work as a software engineer, but was previously employed as a graphic designer and illustrator. :)

I initially had a idea of a chat application that could communicate over the internet.
I did a bit of reasearch about communicating over internet through Java and found that it requires lot of complications which I feel we should avoid for something that we are trying to make for fun. In order to communicate over internet we would need to do NAT traversal by using hole punching or port forwarding. A bypass for this would be to have a application deployed on a server for relay which I again feel involves finding a platform that is free and matches our requirement.
If we go ahead with the simple chat application, it would work only within the local network that is with the devices connected to your home network. It sounds kinda boring to me. What do you guys say ?
So far the easiest one I feel would be the making of a simple clone of a popular game. I don't think we would face any technical difficulties with it.

Im definitely up for making a clone of a game, or any other application. What game will we recreate?
from aidos.
Sup guys, I'm down for anything; anything webapp sounds fun!
from aidos.
Game or client chat application would be good and fun to making bit I don't havd any problem in javaFX project as well I am in.
from aidos.
@jlegendary Provide more detail about the webapp.
@CiaranRoft I am thinking of making a clone of NES Bomberman.

How will we use a chrome extension to send messages over internet ? I haven't worked with that so please explain.
All those who are saying for a chat application, will we able to operate it over the internet ? I haven't tried it before so I am bit skeptical about how it will work.
If we don't have anyone who knows about the implementation of chat application then we will be making clone of the above game.
We will start working with plan for features and implementation details of the project to be build from tomorrow.
from aidos.
I also didn't work over internet but we can try to do something new. Otherwise we can make clone of above game.
from aidos.
@ashish2199 Oh, I love that game! I'm in. But if we were to make a chat client, I'm also in.

I like the bomber man idea

I am down for anything.

I like the bomberman game. And the second one is not bad as well.
from aidos.
I also like the am in, +1 for bomber man !!!
Also depending on how successful this venture is, I admit, it may bit of a stretch, but maybe we can then implement an android version, and possibly get a small game company going, haha.
from aidos.
I just want to be clear and say its a little more than a stretch and a company should not come from this group after creating a clone of a popular game especially when most people here are here to learn. I have high hopes for the group, but lets focus on learning/practicing a group project before all else.
from aidos.
I like the game or chat idea. I say start with the easiest option. We will need to see how well we do as a group and how many people stick around to the end before we should consider anything more complex.
from aidos.
It sounds like most people are on board with Bomberman.
What are the next steps?
from aidos.
Bomberman clone sounds good to me! We should build an app that is just a clone of a few old school games!
from aidos.
I'd like to be apart of this, Bomberman sounds cool.
from aidos.
I am fine with anything. I am here to learn!
from aidos.
+1 for the Bomberman Clone.
If it is direct chat over internet, If I am not wrong there was such a feature in Firefox sometime back, may be we could check how it was done, and try making use of the techniques in involved.
from aidos.
As per the above discussion I feel what we are going to make is not as important as we are doing it for fun and to learn to collaborate and work together.
Hence as per the general consensus, We would be working on making our own version of Bomberman
Link to a online game for those who are not familiar with the game.
Thanks for your feedback.
