Grammar fails to highlight large, legal XML files about language-xml

The files notably contain CDATA sections with multiple lines. I've seen this cause problems before elsewhere. Are these parsed correctly?

I am also having issues where the syntax is not highlighted for XML files, but it is for all files and I have never used it before. Is there some box that I am probably forgetting to check in settings?

Apparently the issue is that the package does not recognize xml files that do not have the .xml. Since these files do not behave the same, I cannot just add a .xml. Is there a way for it to recognize files that do not end in .xml
