I'm having an issue getting our Drupal 8 site to run with acceptable performance on a P2v2 app service plan (7GB memory). Any request that has to hit the database is extremely slow.

Local MariaDB is at least somewhat usable, but using Azure DB for MySQL I'm not even able to log into Drupal.

Same site on another PaaS with 7GB of memory allocated is returning a database dependent response in 0.98 seconds where the Azure version takes 4.86 seconds. Both with clear caches.

Any tips on how to speed things up on Azure? Is the read/write on the persistent drive the bottleneck?

Right now, NGINX is serving all of the files from .git folder and along with .htaccess . Could you please add the following to NGINX configuration at the top?

Could you please add some documentation to this repository stating that it is strongly suggested to add WEBSITES_ENABLE_APP_SERVICE_STORAGE = true to the application settings because otherwise, any changes made with Drush to a drupal installation will not persist if the web app is rebooted.
