We talked about this and concluded that the benefits of creating this special scenario don't really cover the fact that we are working around a limitation that exists today but may be resolved in the future in the emulator (and our main concern still is the live service). The select operation with a limited set of fields aims at scenarios that are more concerned with data transfer than output filtering and that wouldn't be solved by this work around.
Besides, as you mention, this could be added as a higher level abstraction on top of the low level rest wrappers that we do provide. We may reconsider in the future, but, for now, there are just other higher priority tasks. I'll keep the bug with a lower pri.

Our APIs are thin wrappers, so this will change when the api is fixed. We will pass on the feedback to the emulator team
