website's Introduction

BcnEng

Netlify Status

BcnEng is a slack community built around the software engineering community from Barcelona.

You can get an invitation to join it here.

Developers

This repository hosts the code to build the static website using Hugo.

To get started and contribute to its growth, you only need to clone the repository, including its submodules, and fire a docker run command.

More precisely, the instructions to start the server locally are:

git clone --recursive [email protected]:bcneng/bcneng.github.io.git
cd bcneng.github.io

Make sure the folder themes/chunky-poster is populated. Otherwise do a:

git submodule init
git submodule update

Then you can start the server:

docker run --rm -it -v "$PWD:/site" -p "1313:1313" alombarte/hugo hugo server -D --bind 0.0.0.0

If you prefer having Hugo installed locally, you can simply do:

hugo server -D

The service will be available on localhost:1313 in both cases unless the port is already in use.

Thanks for contributing!

website's Issues

Home page content

What content goes on the main page? An explanatory text? What is the objective of the community? The staff members? Any idea?

Copy the contents of https://bcneng.github.io/ and link with the new pages

Redesign freelancers page

  • dark background does not look well with dark navbar
  • desktop version uses a table 馃ぎ
  • not responsive -- fixed at #106

Footer links open in new windows

To make things more comfortable is preferable to open external links in a new window/tab to make easier the navigation and the UX

Remove archived provjects from pinned repos list

(creating this here because there's no meta issue tracker for the Bcn Eng organization)

The list of popular repos on the summary of the organization lists archived projects. That's a bit confusing. Please remove the archived projects from the list.

Gather a diverse and inclusive group to draft the code of conduct.

Origin: #5

Hi all. We don鈥檛 usually bother you too much but this time we would like to ask for your help.

As community, we grew fast. We are now more than 1200 users and the success, at least on sharing knowledge seems to be more than visible.
However we haven't set any ethical code, describe our mission and vision, set a diversity and inclusion program and a Code Of Conduct.

The first step in our journey would be create a team that represents our community. A diverse and inclusive team that will write or promote among other things, a collaborative CoC from scratch.

Most of us don鈥檛 have experience on D&I, but this is a great opportunity to learn and keep improving our community.

If you are interested on helping the community, please write your thoughts here. We will move on creating the team with the interested people and later proceed with the first steps on the CoC creation.

Create page/section for sponsors or supporters

Digital ocean is supporting us by giving a budget for hosting our apps. However, we do not have any section on the website to mention that, which is IMHO the minimum expression of being thankful to them.
Slack is also offering the Standard plan at no cost, so worth to include them as well :)

This feature request is to add a new section on the main page or rather a new page for listing sponsors/partners/supporters and to include our two current ones.

Netiquette

We should have a netiquette to clear certain points of the slack use:

company profiles

Allowing or not company profiles, as explained by @ignasi35's comment here #7 (comment)

Recently a non-personal account representing a company showed up trying to hire people. While 'm not against users promoting their job offers on the appropriate channels I think using non-personal accounts is a no-no. I'm not sure how to reflect that on this CoC. WDYT?

hiring

  • offers from outside BCN/Catalunya that don't allow full (or partial?) remote

others

  • see if admins can move messages to their appropiate channels (e.g someone posting in hiring-discussions or general instead of hiring-billboard etc)

More ideas are welcome. We can move each one of them in its own issue to be voted by the community.

We also should post them in the website (think about @ignasi35's idea of using github pages instead of the current web)

Remove " (1)" from file names

Logo files in the root of the repo (both SVG and PNG formats) are named <name> (1).<extension>. Rename those before they're being used from external resources.

Create helpful commands

As mentioned by Albert in the slack, is interesting to have some helpful commands, for example there a list:

  • ?welcome: Show the welcome message
  • ?coc: send the link of the CoC
  • ?netiquette: send the linkf of the netiquette

Promote channels to new page

Now there is some channels info on the netiquette page.

Describe:

  • how choosing the best channel is very important
  • channels prefixes
  • channels bookmarks and pins
  • special channels (e.g general, random, hiring-job-board, mercadillo)
  • admin fav channels? cry-party, feeling good, etc.
