Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to write a request : )

I'm not very familiar with the file format (from a development point of view), but as far as I can tell there's no easy way of writing layered PSD files.

I'm guessing your use case is: "I want to take my design from Sketch to Photoshop for some further editing, and having layers would make my life so much easier". Is that right?

I may be able to export your slice to multiple PNG files, with transparent background, with the same size, and artwork positioned correctly, so you can re-build the structure in Photoshop. I'm doing something similar in https://github.com/bomberstudios/sketch-framer (but I'm exporting HTML, not PSD)

I might even be able to write a script for Photoshop that takes the PNG files and assembles the PSD files, but in all honesty I don't have much experience (nor much desire to play : ) with Photoshop scripting, so I'd need to be sure that it solves your problem before digging in : )

Thanks for the reply, and yes this would be my use case! I have gotten so used to Sketch that now after joining a new company I often need to toss files over to another designer. Unfortunately they often don't use Sketch. I'm in UI, they're graphic designers.

If photoshop could import a set of png's and put them together into a psd that would be fantastic. Or if there could be a photoshop script to take a sketch files information and translate it to a Photoshop document! I hadn't thought about it from this reverse but now after consideration that actually may work better with Adobe's closed environment.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

+1, that would be an amazing feature. Also as some clients want layered PSDs as a result of our work...!

Sorry for the intrusion, but I'm pinging @ccgus and @pieteromvlee to see if they'd like to collaborate on including https://github.com/ccgus/fmpsd into Sketch : )

Also, I'm invoking @layervault and their amazing https://github.com/layervault/psd.rb library, you guys should talk and do something together...

I'm not sure if the internets are ready to witness so much concentration of talent, but it's worth trying…

I've been meaning to check out psd.rb to see what it does that FMPSD doesn't, and steal the heck out of it. Pieter is free to take the classes and stick them into Sketch as well- just make sure to submit any bug fixes back!

This would be a brilliant feature to add-in,

Often, working in a group environment, it's important that other people can work on your files, in my agency not everybody has converted to Sketch yet - thus I can only use Sketch in my spare time as a hobby, since PSD's are the self proclaimed industry standard, this would be a feature that would help get Sketch into the mainstream and also get people converting away from Photoshop.

+1 to the Export PSD feature. @badamadam totally agree. Makes a PSD deliverable even more critical when the dev team isn't running Macs, so purchasing a few licenses of the ultra affordable Sketch for them means also buying them Macs.

+1 :) Export .sketch to PSD is brilliant idea.
You could implement exporting vectors as shape layers, colors, borders, layer styles (color overlay, drop shadow, innner shadow, gradient, border), images and typography :)

+1 for this as well.

I have a situation where I use Sketch because it's faster and FAR more accurate. However clients still want PSDs. Which is also weird because every site I design/develop is responsive. I refuse to even make a static site unless there's a very good reason. So in that case, the PSDs don;t really matter...yet they still want them...

+1,

My client sent me the Sketch file and it was the first time for me to know about Sketch, i can use it myself but i got the same issue as everyone, we'r having teammates that doesn't have a Mac, they also are not familiar with Sketch (even if you buy for them a Mac), the working speed will slow down.

Somewhat unrelated, but in the same time related and helpful: http://avocode.com/ works for us as a workaround currently. Helps opening and inspecting .sketch (as well as .psd) files on all operating systems.

This is no doubt a beautiful app for designers, and I've used myself. However, In my company most of the front-end guys use photoshop for making changes/converting design into html/css markups on PC. This is indeed a best add on as must to have .psd extension as export so that you can deliver a psd file as delivery rather than a sketch or vector file such as .ai or .eps. Most of the production designers can understand what I'm talking about especially when you work in a huge team where some prefer to use Fireworks, Photoshop, and while others stick with Sketch. You should definitely have this feature as one of the export tools.

If you really want to take your business into the next level, then you should first consider the basic & most accepted formats world wide + new formats. You'll get a lot of new designers who can live up with Sketch rather than using Adobe's Photoshop. That's the USP I'm talking about.

"Build something that people can't live without."

Huge +1

I work in an organisation of 200+ people with different kinds of designers and also developers that use photoshop to check design details. There is no way I can get them to switch to Sketch just because I prefer it over photoshop. So it's actually a crucial feature for me to be able to keep using Sketch..

I've been subscribed to this thread for a while, and it seems as this is more and more interpreted as a general Sketch feature request thread. Note: it's all about the sketch-commands add-on here, which is not maintained (nor monitored, I assume), by Bohemian Coding.

For our voices to be heard, we should best direct them to the sketch developers directly at: http://bohemiancoding.com/sketch/support/faq/

dnlswan avatar dnlswan commented on July 19, 2024

@davidvb thats exactly how my company does it! Mainly for the developers and windows users that rely on adobe D;

If such a tool allowed me to just give them a psd that let them work with it… my life would be complete!

@dnlswan You should try the plugin Measure created by Utom : https://github.com/utom/sketch-measure. There is a magical action named Spec Export. All the specs are created automatically in one click in a HTML file... That's awesome!
