newtaboverride's Issues

Custom URL

Hi!

Is it possible to remove automatic addition "http://" when using custom URL?
Because in my case I want to open "chrome://desktop/content/desktop.html" and
naturally "http://chrome://desktop/content/desktop.html" don't work.

Thank you.

P.S. Firefox 55.0.2 (64-bit)

Deactivate new tab ocerride for specifiy URLs

Since the new version of Tab Override id doesn't work like expected for some Websites. We use some internal websites which will open pop ups usually but tab override will force them to open a new tab instead. This way these pop ups disconnect to their parent tab and do not work properly anymore.

Please add funtionallity to either choose a kind of blacklist for Tab override or add specific options for pop ups or tabs.

URL protocol type chrome:// on Mac OS does not work

Hi,

When moved to version FF 55.0.2 (64bit os x), New Tab Override changes to the extension version.

This version is not able anymore to handle an URL like this for new tabs, it only works for the very first tab when starting FF on Mac OS:

chrome://desktop/content/desktop.html

This type of URL is used with Desktop addon (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/desktop/).

In the config dialogue of New Tab Override extension, the URL is wrongly completed with "http://" what ends up like this:

http://chrome://desktop/content/desktop.html

Of course FF tries to handle this URL and finds something like http://www.chrome.com//desktop/content/desktop.html, what is completely wrong (Google 404 page).

Tested on Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6.

On my Windows 10 installations with FF 55.0.2 (64bit), all of them version 1607, the chrome: protocol is handled correctly for new tabs.

Any other help than changing from Firefox to an other browser?

Please allow focus to be set to web page instead of URL, again...

Love the extension but this has been happening off and on for a long time. Sometimes after updating Firefox the default focus permanently changes, still other times updating New Tab Override causes it.

I simply would like about:home to open and have the cursor in the search bar, not the URL. Why does focus keep changing version after version? Why is it so hard to keep the focus situated?

Custom URL has the option of where to set focus but If I try and enter about:home under Custom URL it says "This is not a valid URL" and defaults to a blank page.

Edit: Also, [email protected]_website is set to true

add better URL validation again

A big part of the URL validation was removed in f859d01 to provide a quick solution for localhost URLs. Maybe a better validation can be re-added in the future.

New Tab Override is turned off.

With Firefox 55.0.3, New Tab Override 8.0.0 and Windows 10 version 1703 (PC), I installed New Tab Override and it worked fine. If I close Firefox and restart it, New Tab Override does not work. If I disable and then enable New Tab Override, New Tab Override works. But the next time I start Firefox, New Tab Override does not work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Allow custom about:xxxxxxx URLs

I use bookrect as a basic list of my preferred shortcuts and use new tab override to set my new tabs to open to that.

However with the new update it won't allow me to set the new tab URL to "about:bookrect".

Loads from newtab.html should probably replace history

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Set up new tab override in Firefox nightly to use "about:blank" for new tabs.
  2. Open a new tab.
  3. Hit the back button.

ACTUAL RESULT: URL bar shows moz-extension://b084e050-67f5-fc42-bf94-7d9e231067d5/html/newtab.html

EXPECTED RESULT: Back button is not even enabled; can't navigate back from the about:blank the new tab opens.

DETAILS: It looks like the addon uses tabs.update() to load about:blank. I filed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1397383 on being able to use that to do a history-replacing load, but it may be worth checking whether location.replace() does the right thing here too...

Cannot use chrome urls

Hi,

I'm trying to use chrome://browser/content/bookmarks/bookmarksPanel.xul as the URL.

However, once I load a new tab, it is replaced by

http://**chrome//**browser/content/bookmarks/bookmarksPanel.xul

Could this be supported?

Thank you,
Best regards

Hello,

it would be great if you could choose the configured home page of firefox preference tab.
In german "Startseite".
Thx.

I don't manage to get Super Start for new tabs again

UPDATE: I just learned that Super Start is no longer compatible to firefox. What a pity. So how can I get my old firefox back???? (I know... not safe enough...) At least it still works as start page.

Original issue:

Once again firefox was destroyed by an update. sigh (I know! They have their reasons...)

Some time ago I had to install newtaboverride to get Superstart back on new tabs. Now even this doesn't work. Or at least I don't manage to get it done.

I read this in the comments on newtaboverride: "In order to use Superstart extension, you can go to about:config, look for extensions.superstart.enable.searchengine.select and change the valor to true. This way, you can make work your about:superstart custom url despite the http://."

I set all superstart valors to "true". But as soon as I insert WHATEVER in the field in newtabboverride, firefox would not open ANY new tab. I tried "about:superstart" but even with "about:blank" the same thing happens.

So I get only new tabs that are completely empty or I get no new tab at all. :-((

PLEASE help me! I am a "many tab personality", leave them open all the time!

Greetings
Karin

White flash when opening new tab, annoying if the new tab background isn't white

Using 7.0.0, I wanted to make my new tab page a blank black page. Before, using the pre-webextension version, this worked fine by setting the URL to about:blank and then using a CSS rule in userContent.css to make it black. Now, however, the new tab flashes white for a moment before turning black for me. I thought maybe it was displaying newtab.html from the extension for a moment, but editing that to set the background to black didn't seem to help. I'm not sure where the problem is or if it's something fixable within the extension.

'resource://'-like adresses to open extensions pages.

Always used it with other extensions, particularly with «Mind the Time» that logs user's time on web. The last one creates its own stat-page using this kind of address:

— resource://jid0-hynmqxa9zqgfjadreri4n2ahksi-at-jetpack/data/index.html

Tried to modify the regexp checking on my own, and now «New Tab Override» consider it valid, but opens its own options when new tab opened. Please, fix it somehow. Thanks.

Unable to set local html page as new tab page

I am trying to use Tilde as a new tab page. I download the html page, and have it on my local hard drive. I use your extension to find the file, and set it. However every time I open a new tab, the page is blank...

Select URL when focus is set to address bar on new tab

Hey,
Great addon - liking it.
One feature request if I may.

It would be great to select the URL in the address bar when the focus option is enabled so that you can start to type straight away and not have to manual select the URL in the address bar beforehand.

Hopefully that makes sense!

Don't spam history

With the version 7.1.0 and Firefox 56.0b2 under OS X I see visit with URL moz-extension://4005c95f-fea9-9648-b5db-b57de571ef4e/html/newtab.html (and no title) added to history.

Probably that URL also briefly blinks in address bar during new tab.

Select all text in address bar on new tab

When opening a new tab using custom URL, local file, or background colour, and having focus set the the address bar, the cursor is placed at the beginning of the address instead of selecting all of the text.

This means I now have to press ctrl+a before I can start typing an address. Before WebExtensions opening a new tab would select all the text in the address bar. I don't know if this is a possibility yet with WebExtensions. An alternative would be to just clear the address bar after setting the page, but again I don't know if this is possible yet.

Contents of URL bar are not selected

When opening a new tab, it's nice to be able to write a URL straight away without having to clear the URL already in the address bar. This extension doesn't select the URL, so you have to select or delete it manually. (I'm guessing this is a Firefox restriction, but I don't know for sure)

Select custom URL

If a new tab starts with a custom URL and the focus is set on the address bar, the custom URL is not selected. If you then start typing, the new text is added left to the existing URL. That leads to results as example.comhttp://www.custom.url if you forget to delete the custom URL manually.
In older Versions, the custom URL was selected and therfore overwritten by pressing the first letter.
Could you re-add that feature please?

Btw: if about:home is selected, the cursor is always set to the webpage, regardless of the option "set to webpage instead of address bar".

about:mozilla as custom URL does not work anymore

I configured in the settings to use a custom URL and as URL typed in about:mozilla.
This worked fine for Firefox 54.0.1 and the New Tab Override plugin version for it. After the update to Firefox 55.0.2 and the update of the New Tab Override plugin the about:mozilla is automatically rewritten to http://about:mozilla and if I open a new tab, I get a blank page and the URL moz-extension://6b642d45-7b21-4e22-87ee-fe6739652005/html/newtab.html in the address bar, but not the about:mozilla page.

Own file as a new tab page?

Since my nightly updated i cant use my own index.html as an New Tab Page. That was the sole purpose for the Extension for me. :/

Setting about:blank makes moz-extension: url flash up for half a second

I have set the newtab page to about:blank. However, when opening a new tab, a moz-extension: url (similar to the one of the preferences) is visible for about half a second and the page loading animation is playing on the new tab. This is very annoying, especially, if you start typing in a url before the new tab has finished loading, as the address bar resets once the "loading" of the new tab is finished.
I am using the VimFX addon, so I can press t to open a new tab and immediately start typing an address. Previously this worked very well, but with this intermediate url, that the webextension version of newtaboverride is calling, my workflow is broken, i.e. I need to wait for like half a second between pressing t and typing an address.

Yes, you can use Superstart extension

Hi,

I open a new thread because those related to the topic are closed and I think this can help. In order to use Superstart extension, you can go to about:config, look for extensions.superstart.enable.searchengine.select and change the valor to true. This way, you can make work your about:superstart custom url despite the http://. It works for me. I guess this applies to other extensions.

Regards.

support local html files

For WebExtensions it's not possible to use the file:// protocol for local file access, therefore local files cannot be used as new tab page via custom url option. New Tab Override 8.0 will add support for uploading a local html file to the add-on's storage und use this as new tab page.

Data URLs not accepted as valid

Using 7.0.0, the extension won't accept a data URL as valid input. For example data:text/html,<html style="background: black"></html> works as expected if I put it in the browser address bar.

It's just not working

I have this listed in my extensions/add-ons, as the replacement for Custom New Tab. But suddenly, a Yahoo screen shows up and I have not configured that anywhere. The New Tab override is set to open https://www.wusf.usf.edu.

So what's up with that? Where can it be configured properly?

"Access to local files via URL is no longer possible due to Firefox restrictions"

"Access to local files via URL is no longer possible due to Firefox restrictions" is not at all true. I have firefox 55.0.3 (64 bit) and curiously with an older version of the addon it overrode the new tab to a custom local url of my choosing, until the addon suddenly updated and now "restrictions" prevent it. Reverting to an older version of the addon (6.0.1, in my case) fixed the issue. the addon overrides new tabs with local URL's with ease. If you're like my and have a custom home page you made, use an older version of the addon and it will work. Worked for me, anyway. Thanks.

Local file no more valid

In the lastest version local HTML files such as " /Users/me/Documents/index.html " are not valid anymore.
