To Debug:

1) start openocd
sudo openocd --file /usr/share/openocd/scripts/board/ek-lm4f120xl.cfg

2) start gdb and execute following commands
arm-none-eabi-gdb bin/firmware.obj
(gdb) target extended-remote :3333
(gdb) monitor reset halt
(gdb) load
(gdb) monitor reset init

Or in lieu of step 2
you can run
arm-none-eabi-gdb bin/firmware.obj --command=debug.gdb
