This repository is meant to hold my efforts following Jennifer Widom's introductory course in databases.
Online versions of the course include:
- the 2014 Stanford version, which runs from 20140106-0322. An "informal Statement of Accomplishment" can be issued on completion of the course.
- the 2011 Coursera version, now in "self-service" mode — automated grading and an unmonitored forum exist, but no certificate is issued.
In most cases, the lectures are identical. In some cases (lectures 5-1 and 5-2, for instance), the 2011 version is a single, long video while the 2014 version is broken into sections, with a not-for-credit quiz between each pair of sections.
The book is Jeffrey D. Ullum and Jennifer Widom, A First Course in Database Systems, 3rd ed. (2007). I have seen a scanned (non-searchable) copy of the Chinese edition (China Machine Press 机械工业出版社, 2008) on line, but I don't know anything about the legality of the scan (the Chinese version appears to be licensed for sale in the PRC).
