Sorry about that -- it's because the README on GitHub is automatically generated whenever I push to the repo, so it's newer than the currently released gem. (The forthcoming 1.2.4 deprecates :string and :file in favor of a unified :body option.)
I'll go put a note on the README so this is more clear. In the meantime, you can get the right README at http://fakeweb.rubyforge.org or by visiting http://github.com/chrisk/fakeweb/tree/fakeweb-1.2.3 (the tag for the current release).
