It would probably need to be written on inorganic material (assuming a book might get chewed up by their portal tech)

They probably would also have physical backups for scematics and technical/scientific knowledge. They might not be keen to share the really advanced stuff with you or it might be useless to you on account of differant language but they might be willing to share a few instruction manuals for basic things like how to build basic/primitive machines, methalergical knowledge, fighting styles, smithing, chemical recepies, etc. It wouldn´t surprise me if they have a little side trade selling certain knowladge to locals in the form of books. Both to get extra trade, build relations and help the locals last longer with minimal cost to themselfs.

It'd be pretty fun to use a fighting style not of this world, & it'd make sense for them to want to help other survivors, even if they aren't taking them along.
