README

Azure Cloud-Native Dev Container (MVP)

Minimal, redistributable Dev Container for Azure architects and cloud-native developers.

No personal shell customizations, themes, or editor configs — just the core toolchain and credential passthroughs. Tooling is installed declaratively via official Dev Container features, so the environment is reproducible and the provisioning script stays tiny.

What's included

Layer Tools Provided by
Base Ubuntu + generic vscode user base image + common-utils
Azure Azure CLI, Bicep azure-cli feature (installBicep)
Azure Az PowerShell module powershell feature (modules: Az)
Azure Azure Developer CLI (azd) ghcr.io/azure/azure-dev/azd feature
Cloud-native kubectl, Helm kubectl-helm-minikube feature (minikube off)
GitHub GitHub CLI (gh) github-cli feature
GitHub GitHub Copilot CLI (copilot) copilot-cli feature
Editor Small VS Code extension set (Copilot, Azure Resources, Bicep, azd, Containers, Kubernetes, PowerShell) devcontainer.json

post-create.sh only wires up git credential helpers and Copilot CLI trusted folders — all tool installation is handled by the features above.

Credential passthrough

Host credentials are bind-mounted in (contents gitignored):

Host path (in this repo) Container path
.devcontainer/.credentials/azure /home/vscode/.azure
.devcontainer/.credentials/gh /home/vscode/.config/gh

SSH is not bind-mounted. VS Code / Dev Containers forwards your host SSH agent automatically, which is more portable than mounting ~/.ssh and avoids key-permission issues.

Copy existing host auth into the credential folders, or sign in inside the container:

az login
gh auth login

Use it

As a standalone workspace

git clone <this-repo-url> .devcontainer-azure
# Open .devcontainer-azure in VS Code / Copilot CLI and Reopen in Container

Drop into an existing project

Copy the .devcontainer folder from this repo into your project root (or add this repo as a git submodule at .devcontainer).

Validate

bash -n .devcontainer/post-create.sh
npx --yes @devcontainers/cli build --workspace-folder .

Design rules

  • Prefer declarative features over imperative install scripts.
  • post-create.sh is idempotent and non-fatal (optional steps warn and continue).
  • Generic vscode user — safe to redistribute.
  • No corporate registry overrides, personal git identity, themes, or niche tooling.
