Portable SQL Syntax

Please note the following regarding the SQL code you posted to the wiki page:

( wp_posts.post_date, wp_posts.ID ) < ( '2013-01-05 11:00:20', 1174 )

is, unfortunately, not very portable:

  • in MySQL it works, but performs poorly
  • in PostgreSQL it works and performs well
  • In other databases (Oracle, SQL Server, SQLite) it doesn't work at all :(

If you want to have on query that works on any DB and produces good performance, you need to do is like this:

wp_posts.post_date <= '2013-01-05 11:00:20'
AND NOT(wp_posts.post_date = '2013-01-05 11:00:20' and wp_posts.ID >= 1174)

Yes, this sucks. It is required because of the poor support for row-values amongst SQL database (a feature that is in the standard since 1992!).

The rationale is explained here: http://use-the-index-luke.com/sql/partial-results/fetch-next-page

Let me know if there is anything unclear.
