How-To's

How to create a map game

1. Figure out the place you want to guess.
2. Create the KML file(s) for the place, add them to repo.
3. Create the database record for the place -- www/newgame.bash streamlines this process, and should be run from the command line of the server you're running this on.
4. Create the markup for the particular mapgame. Here's one example of this
5. Upload the markup to production (example), then iframe it into an article (example).

How to get started with a dev environment

1. Check out this repo. git clone [email protected]:denverpost/mapgame.git
2. Symlink the repo's www directory into an active webserver on your computer.
3. To start on testing the backend, take a look at the sql in www/admin/tables.sql

Write tests for edit.py c'mon

Fix language on second graf when people get it right.

Right now it's "Your guess was further away than 0 other guesses. That means you did worse than 0% of the people who played this."

Should be "Your guess was closer than X other guesses. That means you did better than X% of the people who played this."

Load the solution kml on page load rather than dynamically.

Move kml files to extras.denverpost.com

Make it work on mobile

This means make the admin create the HTML for a page that can be uploaded to extras. The mobile-friendly page should include branding ads and omniture.

In case we're guessing a country's location, allow using boundary file (KML?) as target location

Allow the config object to handle map styles.

Publish an auto-updating list of recent guesses on the map game index

Make this launchable with a guess-as-close-to-the-nearest-point portion of the game.

Allow for more than one mapgame on a page

Create functionality so people can share their results on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Google changed the variable names they use for lat/lng, breaking the mapgame.

Calculate distance (miles/km) from any given boundary

Update existing games so all have correct wrong_guess_average numbers, so we can start using that number

Clean up javascript handling, turn js into an object.

Allow toggling of highways, state boundaries in mapgame admin

Track wrong_guess_average in addition to guess_average

Tell people how their guess compared with everyone else's.

Streamline map game logging

Google maps changed the name of the vars representing lat/lng

Used to be k is lat, D is long in Google maps. Not anymore.

Allow for group games, with a overall score and ranking when all games in a group have been completed.

Allow edit.py to check if a string exists, and if it doesn't, run the search and replace

Move mapgame javascript into a separate file for including, allow for local js config to overwrite object.

Pass config variables (miles/km, whether to log to server, URL to log against)

Log the games we've created (URLs and names), publish that list somewhere.

Current fail message: "Your guess landed 9 miles from the target. 195 other people have played. An average guess landed 78 miles away. 86 people picked right."

Improve mobile map game experience

Instead of dragging a marker, add a cross-hairs to the map and allow readers to drag the map to their guess. Their guess will be recorded after they click a "Make My Guess" button.

Allow a mapgame to have a "guesses count as correct if within X miles" feature

Create admin interface that allows producers to build a mapgame

This would be a map that allows producers to set the title, the point and the zoom level, and would output the javascript necessary for pasting into an article.

This also needs to record the mapgames created in a database.
