withFeature throwing exception

In 0.6 I see an error. Using version 0.4 this error is not there:

Either provide persistence of feature switch state, or provide a hook to load the state from outside the config

As the number of features being switched grows, maintaining the state of the switches between app restarts gets more and more painful and being able to persist the state across app restarts gets more and more needed. While I think that worrying about persisting the state of the switches might fall outside the scope of the plugin, at the very least there needs to be appropriate hooks in place for the application to handle the persistence.

As far as I can see, all that would really be needed is a way for the application to be notified of switch change events, and a way for the plugin to ask the application for the state to set the switches to (possibly through the bootstrap).

Of course, this becomes more of an issue with more fine-grained control over feature switches.

Allow some way to turn features on/off for a single session, a single user, or a single group of users

It would be great to have more granularity over the scope the feature was active for. Activating the feature for the entire application, while useful, doesn't really let us leverage the full power of feature flags / switches. In particular, things like a ramped-up rollout require more control than just on or off.

Some of the scopes that we would want would be:

  • Session: This lets us try things out or demo things, but only have it enabled for our current browsing session. We would also use this to turn things on in one browser but not another to show the difference between the feature being on or being off.
  • User: Being able to activate a feature only for certain users would give us fine-grained control for things like beta-testing or for doing A/B testing. Obviously, not of any use if there isn't the concept of a User in an app, but doesn't seem to be the norm.
  • User Group: Same as for single users, but less overhead to manage. I would expect this would align with a role-based permission system in most cases.
