Buy new hard drives
- Buy 10 x 2 TB drives (~$300)
- Buy MD1200, HP D3200, or other DAS (~$300)
- Buy SAS cabling (SFF-8088 x 2) (~$50)
Equipment installation and setup
- Install DAS and all disks
- Attach to existing host machine and create virtual drive
- Provision resources and create new VM on virtual drive (Debian 10)
- Install necessary packages and programs (PSQL, Python, various libraries, jq)
Download, clean, and import data
- Download ALL reddit data from pushshift.io via torrent and FTP
- Extract data using pbzip2 and tar
- Strip unnecessary columns/information using jq, then resave
- Write resulting JSON files directly to a postgreSQL db
