I would like to create a dev talk topic to push this idea. But I don't want to do it if you don't agree with what I'm proposing.

I just discovered this repositories. You image layers and OpenVDB branch are really helpful :)

If you paint in the UV/image editor image doesn't update to the 3d view until you start to paint there as well.

Open an image, switch to paint, add a layer.

Add an image, switch to paint, open an image as layer.

When an image is opened in the image layer, the image is blank when switching from view to paint.
